Motorcycles cause a far higher rate of injuries among children than quad bikes do, a study from UNSW Sydney and NeuRA has found, but quad bikes account for more serious individual injuries.

In a retrospective population study carried out by UNSW and its medical research affiliates NeuRA and The George Institute, the study authors examined all records of children aged 0-16 years admitted to NSW hospitals in the years 2001-2018 for injuries sustained in off-road motorcycle or quad-bike crashes.

Published in the journal Injury Prevention, the research noted 6624 crashes resulted in hospitalisations during this time, with 5156 (78 per cent) involving motorcycles (including motocross bikes, trail bikes and other off-road motorcycles) and 1468 (22 per cent) involving quad-bikes.

When looking at the type of injuries sustained by the kids, there were clear differences between the two-wheeled and four-wheeled varieties. Motorcycle riders were more likely to have lower limb injuries, but less likely to have head, neck, abdominal or thoracic injuries than quad-bike riders. Quad-bike riders had higher severity in injuries on average, with longer hospital stays.

Tragically, there were 10 fatalities over the study period – six from motorcycles and four from quad-bikes.

Lead author of the study, Dr Chris Mulligan, is an orthopaedic doctor at Sydney Children’s Hospital and affiliated researcher with UNSW Medicine & Health and NeuRA. He said he and his fellow researchers wanted to measure and distinguish the differences between off-road quad-bike and motorcycle injuries among children – something that had never been done before at the population level.

“Our findings support the policy changes over the last 10 years with regards to quad-bikes after various coronial inquests and media attention, but the high number of hospitalisations we saw indicates a need for more attention to motorcycles too,” Dr Mulligan said.

Focus on two-wheelers

As a practising clinician, Dr Mulligan has seen his fair share of children presenting with serious injuries from both motorcycles and quad-bikes. With almost four times as many hospitalisations from motorcycle injuries than quad-bikes, he and his fellow researchers call for a greater focus of injury prevention for two-wheeled riders.

“We know that over the last 10 years there’s been a lot of research particularly into the vehicle risk factors in quad-bikes,” Dr Mulligan said.

“A lot of good work has been done at UNSW in relation to the stability testing and other vehicle-based design modifications of quad-bikes, but we have not had the same level of research done for two-wheeled bikes.

“While best practice advice for quad-bikes is to not recommend their use by children under 16, this may not be practical for motorbikes. More efforts are needed to find ways to minimise risks to children using motorbikes recreationally or on family farms.”

More data needed

But could it be that there are more motorcycle injuries because there are more motorbikes?

UNSW Health & Medicine’s Associate Professor Julie Brown, who is Joint Director of the Transurban Road Safety Centre at NeuRA, said while we don’t know with certainty, it is a reasonable assumption.

“It is likely that more children use motorcycles and this is why we see more hospitalisations among children using them. The popularity of these vehicles over quad bikes also indicates a need to find ways to minimise the harms associated with this activity,” she said.

“To understand this better, we’d need to know how many vehicles there are in circulation. And because both off-road motorcycles and quad bikes are unregistered, and ridden off public roads, it’s not possible to know how many children are riding and for how long, and over what time period.”

This will be the subject of further study that the group is involved in.

“We want to engage with industry and other groups and get access to sales data, which would enable us to define what the baseline level of exposure to these vehicles is and what the risk factors are.

“Working co-operatively with young riders and their families, riding organisations, farming groups and industry bodies will be critical in developing effective and acceptable injury prevention measures,” A/Prof. Brown said.

MY17 Suzuki DR200S. Riding a Motocross dirt bike is an experience that most people wish to have at least once in their lives. However, it isn’t the easiest thing to pull off.

Even if you have been riding motorcycles for a long time, riding a DTB can be completely different.

That’s why it’s important to keep a few things in mind while riding a dirt bike for the first time. And in this post, we are talking about X of those things. So, buckle up, here are the pointers.

BMW Safari launches new programme for 2017

1. Acknowledge The Clutch’s Difference

The first most important thing to note is that the clutch apparatus on a dirt bike is slightly different from that on a regular motorbike.

And what sets them apart?

POWER!

What may seem like a normal start on a regular bike can pop up a wild wheelie while riding a dirt bike. So, before you actually start a dirt bike and pull the throttle for the initial push, make sure you have tested the waters by accelerating when the bike is parked on a paddock or main stand.

2. Don’t Sit Near The Tail of Bike

One common mistake that beginner riders may make is to sit near the end of the bike’s tail.

This may look cool on a cafe racer or even on a regular bike. However, this seating position can be dangerous while riding a dirt bike.

It’s also because the power of a dirt bike is way more than that of a regular bike of the same cubic capacity.

So, if you sit near the rear end, you may accidentally pop up a wheelie or may simply lose balance because of the initial wild punch.

3. Challenge Yourself, But Not To The Extremes

You may have the dreams of becoming the best MX rider on the planet. But know that Greece wasn’t built in a day, and nor was the world’s most excellent MX rider.

Similarly, you may not be able to make a level 100 progress on day 1. Keep this thing in mind and move slowly towards bigger challenges. The idea is to be consistent and focused.

Also, going mountain climbing on day 1 of your motocross escapades may be tough on your health. Every single accident can be critical and must be avoided at all costs.

So, move slow. Don’t burden yourself with all the challenges on the first day.

4. Safety Should Be The First Priority

Riding a two-wheeler is always risky. Even for the best and most experienced riders. This means that the risk of falling always remains. That’s why, before we get on the dirt bike, we must make sure that we are wearing the right motocross gear to keep injuries at bay.

From a riding jacket to riding boots, riding gloves, a certified helmet, knee pads, and arm pads, each safety equipment is important.

Also, make sure that your helmet has a visor. The tracks for dirt bikes are too dirty (obviously), for a carefree ride or practice session.

Final words

Many of us may have dreams of riding motocross bikes like our favourite sports riders. But their skills have been built up over years and years of practice, mistakes, sweat, and blood. Clearly, every big thing has to be started at some point.

And for those who are planning to start dirt biking professionally or at least try their luck at the track, we shared a list of four beginner tips to keep in mind.

Hopefully, this was helpful.

aATV Australia’s market leader in off-road vehicles, Polaris Inc. (NYSE: PII), has announced it will withdraw all ATV (quad bike) models from sale in the Australian market prior to October 2020 when stage one of the new Consumer Goods (Quad Bikes) Safety Standard 2019 takes effect.

The new Standard takes effect in two stages from 11th October 2020 and 11th October 2021 respectively.  Whilst it already holds the required US or European standards for its ATV (quad bikes) and has the capability to comply with the testing and labelling required under stage one of the new Standard, Polaris has deemed the process of complying to be unviable considering the rapidly reducing size of the ATV (quad bike) market, the fact it had already committed to withdraw ATV (quad bikes) from the market by October 2021 when fitment of so-called “Operator Protection Devices” (OPD’s) becomes mandatory and the substantial range of vehicle alternatives Polaris already offers through its 30 models with properly engineered Roll Over Protection Structures (ROPS).

Polaris has actively opposed the fitment of so-called OPD’s due to the lack of reliable science or evidence to support the safety claims made of such devices, and the fact that research indicates these devices will likely cause as many injuries as they prevent.  Whilst it had the option to comply with stage one and remain in the ATV (quad bike) market for a further 12 months (until October 2021), until so-called OPD fitment becomes mandatory, Polaris believes the requirements to do so make this an unviable short-term proposition and will instead focus on the 30 models with properly engineered ROPS it already offers in the Australian market.

Polaris To Exit ATV (Quad Bike) Market In October 2020

“Over recent years the Australian off-road vehicle market has experienced record levels of transference as farmers transition en masse from quad bikes, to Side by Side vehicles,” said Alan Collins, Managing Director of Polaris Australia & New Zealand.  “Polaris has led this transition with its industry-leading range of 30 vehicles with ROPS, and the market shift has been helped along in no small part by the safety rebates offered by SafeWork NSW and WorkSafe Victoria.”

“Considering the vast contraction of the quad bike market over the past five years as customers flock to Side by Side vehicles with properly engineered ROPS and factory integrated safety technologies, Polaris maintains its view that the market itself would end up signaling the end for quad bikes over coming years anyway through sheer lack of demand driven by the availability, benefits and range of Side by Side vehicles.”

“Polaris has publicly stated numerous times that we believed within 24 months the quad bike market would be minimal at best, as the market shift away from ATVs (quad bikes) and towards Side by Side products was in full force long before any government mandates or safety standards were enacted – obviously this shift will now accelerate even further over the coming two years as the Consumer Goods (Quad Bikes) Safety Standard 2019 takes effect.”

As it moves to exit the ATV (quad bike) market by October, Polaris’ focus going forward will be on ensuring Side by Sides are accessible and offer a strong value equation for customers, with models such as the entry-level Ranger 500 boasting a price point cheaper than most competitors 500cc ATVs (quad bikes) to offer consumers the confidence of a Ranger for the price of a quad.

Polaris is withdrawing all ATVs (quad bikes) from sale by October 2020, including its current 50cc and 110cc Outlaw youth models.  However, Polaris will continue to offer its incredibly unique, ROPS equipped, youth range comprising the single-seat ACE 150, sporty RZR 170 and Ranger 150 which is equipped with app-based speed control and geo-fencing.

Polaris and its dealers are already clearing the remaining stock of ATVs (quad bikes) ahead of the October 2020 deadline, so with stock already running low – Polaris urges customers to get in quickly if they wish to get their hands on one of the last remaining Polaris ATVs (quad bikes) in Australia.

Polaris ATVs (quad bikes) will very much remain in production for the rest of the world’s markets and full product support for parts and warranty will continue in Australia for at least the next decade.

We’ve all heard of a SUV. But what about a FUV?

An American manufacturer is blurring the lines between bikes and cars with a machine it calls the FUV, or Fun Utility Vehicle – and it should be available in Australia in the near future.

The Arc-imoto FUV Evergreen has two wheels upfront and one at the back.

It looks like an oversized tricycle with a roof — complete with a windscreen and a small luggage area.

There are handle-bars — complete with heated handgrips — rather than a steering wheel.

Instead of a petrol engine the FUV uses two electric motors for propulsion and has a claimed top speed of 121km/h.

The maker says the Arcimoto will travel about 160km before requiring a four-hour charge. The batteries sit under the seats, helping keep the centre of gravity low.

Arcimoto has even created a version called the Deliverator, which ditches the rear seat for a large box designed to carry “a wide array of products, from parcels to pizza, groceries to dry cleaning”.

Honda’s Mean Mower sets a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® title #MeanMower

  • Mean Mover V2 goes from 0-100 mph in 6.29 seconds, setting a new record with Guinness World Records #MeanMower
  • Powered by the 999cc engine from a Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP
  • Power-to-weight ratio greater than that of a Bugatti Chiron

Honda’s Mean Mower has re-entered the record books after setting a brand new Guinness World Records® title for the ‘Fastest Acceleration 0-100 mph for a Lawnmower’.

The new record was set at the Dekra Lausitzring, near Dresden, Germany, on May 6, 2019. Under the watchful eye of a Guinness World Records® adjudicator, Honda’s all-new Mean Mower V2 averaged 0-100 mph in just 6.29 seconds; driven by Jess Hawkins, experienced stunt driver, kart and car racer.

Check out the action in the video here: www.hondaengineroom.co.uk/meanmower

As well as hitting such a blistering straight-line speed to set the new record, Mean Mower V2 also had to demonstrate that it could still do what it is actually designed for – to cut grass – which it does. The ability to still cut grass is thanks to slight revisions to the cutter deck to house the chain driving the rear tyres and the two batteries required to power electric motors, which spin carbon fibre blades to mow.

Honda’s Mean Mower sets a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® title #MeanMower

Under the regulations of Guinness World Records, the mower must also ‘intrinsically look like a lawnmower’ – in this case the Honda HF 2622 lawn tractor – which it does by carrying over its front cowl, grass box and body panels.

Unveiled in summer 2018, Mean Mower V2 set out to build on the incredible success of the original Mean Mower, which became the world’s fastest lawnmower on March 8, 2014 when it hit 116.87 mph. But this time Honda and its British Touring Car Championship partner, Team Dynamics, took the development to a whole new level, using computer aided design, bespoke parts, advanced materials and even 3D printing.

At the heart of Mean Mower V2 lies its engine. This time a 999cc four-cylinder unit taken from Honda’s high-performing CBR1000RR Fireblade SP motorcycle, producing 200 bhp at 13,000 rpm. It packs almost double the power of the original Mean Mower, with a super-light frame and engine dry weight of just 69.1kg, which overall results in a power-to-weight ratio in excess of that of a Bugatti Chiron.

The official acceleration figure was measured using a VBOX on-board recording device, which was fitted, set-up and verified by independent and accredited timers, Timing Solutions Limited. To meet the requirements of Guinness World Records, the mower had to record the same run, in both directions, within an hour – with the average acceleration of these two runs taken as the official time.

With an average of 6.29 seconds, Honda set the new Guinness World Records® title for ‘Fastest 0-100mph acceleration for a lawnmower (prototype)’. The team also took the opportunity while at the Lausiztring to put Mean Mower V2 through its paces on a longer run to see what it is really capable of, recording an incredible top speed of 150.99mph. The time was once again independently recorded by Timing Solutions Limited using the VBOX data.

Honda’s Mean Mower sets a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® title #MeanMower

Dave Hodgetts, Managing Director of Honda (UK) comments: “The original Mean Mower was an incredible machine; but this time we’ve taken it to a whole new level with version two. After taking the top speed record in 2014, we wanted to do something a little different by setting an all-new record for acceleration, and the result is fantastic. Team Dynamics have gone above and beyond in developing and building this real feat of engineering, and hats off to Jess for being brave enough to get behind the wheel!”

Brand new BMW R 1200 GS Rallye X to tackle Finke Desert RaceThe new BMW R 1200 GS Rallye X will be put to one of the world’s great off-road tests in June, taking on the legendary Finke Desert Race in Central Australia.

To celebrate the arrival of the most off-road focussed R 1200 GS yet, BMW Motorrad marketing manager Miles Davis will hop aboard a Rallye X and tackle approximately 465 kilometres of gruelling desert terrain.

“After riding a pre-production version of the Rallye X in the two GS Safari events last year I knew it was a much more off-road focused bike,” said Davis.

“I came up with the idea of showcasing this by riding it in Finke and started to get excited about the idea. There are around 500 motorcycles entered in the 2017 event – it sold out in less than a day – and entrants generally ride lightweight 250cc to 500cc motocross machines, so riding a 200 kilogram-plus R 1200 GS is definitely going to be a bit different.”

Preparations are already in full swing, with Davis having completed a pre-run covering the Finke course on a locally-prepared R 1200 GS featuring the sports suspension package that will be standard on the Rallye X.

“The pre run went about as well as I could have hoped for,” added Davis. “It was tough physically and mentally, especially because I did both legs in one day.

“In these conditions it takes 100 per cent concentration to pick the right speed for the different sections of whoops. I won’t really be treating it as a race, it’s an endurance test, so I just need to look after the bike and be as smooth as possible.”

The Finke will immediately be followed by a customer ride programme that will traverse the Simpson Desert’s 1100 sand dunes, running from Alice Springs to Birdsville via Mount Dare.

“Something this epic trip will really showcase is how capable and versatile the R 1200 GS really is,” said Davis.

“On this trip we will have two support vehicles, allowing riders to ride the sandy route without the weight of luggage and extra fuel, so it will be easy and enjoyable.

“Obviously riders thinking about coming along on the BMW GS Tours Simpson Crossing, by BMW Safari, need to be experienced in riding off -road, with a bit of sand experience too. We know that many GS Safari customers are very good riders, so this is a chance for a small group to be part of something very special.”

BMW GS riders looking to register interest in the BMW GS Tours – Simpson Crossing can email: info@bmwsafari.com.au.

This changes in 2017 with a tandem GS and TS Safari – a similar programme to the original BMW Safaris – with TS riders on the road and GS riders taking to the dirt. The two groups congregate overnight for evening festivities; a time to share experiences, learnings and daily Safari highlights.

BMW Safari launches new programme for 2017

GS Tours by BMW Safari

To satisfy demand and provide more intimate events for new riders, BMW Safari will be running a series of smaller adventure rides throughout 2017. These events will be run under the name ‘GS Tours, by BMW Safari’. The first event, which is already sold out, launches from Merrijig at the base of Mt Buller through to Bright, showcasing the stunning Victorian High Country.

In conjunction with the GS Tours by BMW Safari, a new initiative called the ‘Bring a Buddy programme’ has been launched to introduce new riders to the adventure scene. A GS rider can now bring a buddy friend, even if they ride another brand.

GS Tour participation will be capped for a smaller number of riders and tour support will be provided in typical BMW Safari style.

GS Tours, MT SEAVIEW (Mid north coast NSW)

Dates:

25 – 26 May: Mt Seaview, 2 day BMW Off-Road Training Course (optional).
27 – 29 May: utilising Mt Seaview as a base, enjoy 2 days of GS heaven.

“Mental illness and its associated issues, including suicide, is a huge problem in society. BMW Motorrad is very happy to be involved in helping spread the message of help through supporting the Black Dog Ride Raffle and Lifeline,” said Lundgren.
