RooBadge – Moving vehicle trials to begin for Volkswagen’s kangaroo deterrent. A seemingly simple device that replaces a Volkswagen’s front badge. This could save countless kangaroos and hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. By emitting a warning signal of a vehicle’s approach.

Kangaroo ahead sign bewareDeveloped over three years by Volkswagen Australia and the DDB Group in consultation with the University of Melbourne and WIRES. It is hoped that Volkswagen’s ‘RooBadge’ will help reduce collisions with kangaroos. These comprise some 90 per cent of on-road wildlife accidents in this country.

Connecting to an in-car app, RooBadge calibrates a vehicle’s GPS coordinates with kangaroo distribution data. The ‘badge’ itself is a circular disc some 17cm in diameter that would act as protective shields. Replacing the current Volkswagen roundel/badge.

This conveys a unique audio deterrent for the kangaroo species that inhabits the vehicle’s particular location.

A mixture of natural and artificial sounds is mixed in real time and projected in a high frequency audio signal.

RooBadge extensive trials

After extensive trials, permission has been obtained from the University of Melbourne Office of Research Ethics and Integrity to move into Stage Four trials, involving kangaroos in the wild.

While there have existed for some time supposed deterrent devices, none have been scientifically developed or proven.

“[RooBadge does] something no kangaroo deterrent has been able to do before,” Melbourne University’s Associate Professor Graeme Coulson said.

“It’s difficult to produce a single sound that will deter all kangaroos. Because the species are different to each other. Using advancement in car technology we can change the sound deterrent by GPS location.

“We have worked on sounds that will be meaningful to Eastern Grey Kangaroos. Things like dingo calls, alarm calls made by birds and the alarm thumps that kangaroos make to warn each other. We will then be able to tweak the sound for other species.”

WIRES is grateful

Spokesperson, John Grant, said: “Kangaroo collisions are increasing every year. With more motorists on the roads over the Easter holiday period we are expecting a spike in rescue calls for injured adults and displaced joeys. WIRES is grateful to automotive companies like Volkswagen for researching and developing solutions to better protect both our kangaroos and motorists.”

Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ryan Davies said: “Why is Volkswagen investing time and energy in this project? Because we can and it’s the right thing to do.

RooBadge_Hero_DrivingLeft (1)

“A collision with a ‘roo can be devastating. It is not easily forgotten once seen, and certainly not if experienced. Then there’s the possibility of a front-on collision. With an approaching vehicle at country road speeds when one driver is trying to avoid striking a kangaroo. These are even more likely to have a fatal human outcome.”

The University of Melbourne’s Dr Helen Bender, whose research has been used extensively in this project, said: “Roadkill is a problem all around the world. What’s interesting about deer relative to kangaroos is that they’re very similar in body size, head size, and ear size. What we know from science is that the ear shape in the head shape tells us that they probably have similar hearing. ranges. So, whatever we learn has transferability to the deer as well.”

Silverado 2500 Heavy Duty – Chevrolet have upgraded their Silverado 2500 Heavy Duty dual cab pickup truck.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD driving 1

Pickups from America are converted into right hand drive and are a size above the traditional ute. In the Australian market they are categorised as pickups above $100,000.

Our more traditional utes outsell Pickups by a ratio of 20 to 1 but the Pickup numbers are increasing and for 2023 it was the larger versions of these very large utes that showed the most percentage growth.

The Silverado 2500 HD comes with a muscular powertrain and a wide range of operational features especially if you are going to haul a trailer. As Shawn Norwood, the lead engineer from Detroit for the Silverado Line, who came to Australia for the launch said, “These vehicles are for people who are towing the thing they love the most be it a caravan, boat, horse float or race car”.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD profile

Silverado 2500 Exterior

The upgrade model has a new front fascia and grille design. The image is clear with a very tall, square front in the style of a modern truck. It is not good for seeing pedestrians, especially if they’re small such as children, which emphasises that these vehicles have limitations for operating in an urban area.

The external dimensions are:

  • Overall Length: 6387 mm
  • Wheel Base: 4036
  • Body Width: 2263 mm
  • Height: 2039 mm
  • Front Wheel Track: 1731 mm

2024 GMSV SILVERADO HD 2500 Z71 REAR TUB Crop Lowres

A big truck has good carrying capacity, but with the sides getting taller and taller it can be hard to access the cargo area. Shawn, who loves using these vehicles for practical purposes, admits that things in the back of the tray always seem to roll forward to the becoming hard to get to without climbing over the rear tailgate.

To overcome this the Silverado has a small winglet on the outside of each side of the vehicle at the front of the tray and just behind the cabin. They are made to stand on and reach into the back cargo area.

The Durabed cargo area has 12 standard tie downs and LED cargo area lighting.

GMSV SILVERADO 2500 HD INTERIOR

Silverado 2500 Interior

The interior has clear attention to comfort and space.

With a new design there is now jet-black leather appointments; a Bose premium sound system; power sunroof; and a power rear window out onto the tray.

There are two very large information screens. Directly in front of the driver is a 12.3-inch screen while there is a 13.4-inch infotainment touch screen in the centre.

In both cases they’re not overpopulated with information nor are they overcomplicated. The Silverado uses the centre infotainment screen very affectively. Not only for the traditional controls but for images and information to do with towing.

There is also a head up display which is clear and you can vary the information on it. The clever feature is to include the time gap to the vehicle ahead of you (up to three seconds). This is an excellent feature. Keeping the right distance behind the vehicle is best measured by time rather than guessing the physical distance. The time factor is also directly related to the speed.

The internal dimensions for the front passengers are:

  • Front Head Room: 1093mm
  • Front Leg Room: 1131mm
  • Front Shoulder Room: 1677mm

Space for second row passengers is certainly much better than traditional utes that typically have a very upright back of the seat.

Silverado 2500 Powertrain

If you think a Pickup is large you should see the size of the engine!

The Silverado has a 6.6 litre turbocharged V8 diesel engine with 350 kilowatts of power and a massive 1322 Newton metres of torque. It has a four-wheel drive, on demand system, a two-speed transfer case, driving through a 10 speed automatic gearbox.

There is a switch to enhance engine braking although without a trailer the difference did not appear to be all that significant.

Australian rules limit the towing capacity to a 4.5 tonne but in America the limit is over 8 tonnes. So the Silverado is well within its capability in our market, making it easy to drive and you won’t become a slow roadblock for the vehicles behind you.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD media drive event March 2024

Towing Aids

Chevrolet has made a big effort to provide aids for towing. It gives you a strong feeling of ease and security.

There’s a revised the final drive ratio to enhance low-end performance by as much as 25%.

Part of the camera options include a view of your hitching area so you can accurately match the tow ball with the trailer arm.

You can set up a range of parameters for the regular trailers you tow, and save those, to call up when necessary.

There is a trailer tyre pressure/temperature monitoring system. And a pre departure checklist that you can call up on your infotainment screen.

There is also a trailer lighting diagnostic tool which goes through a sequence of all the lights. Brakes, indicators and parking lights, on your trailer so that you can get out and check if they’re working, even when you’re on your own.

The adaptive cruise control function can now be used while towing.

You can option up to get 14 different camera angles showing not only the sides of the vehicle and trailer, but also your cargo such as a horse in a float, and the view of traffic behind.

A few missing features

There are a couple of items that are missing.

The vehicle doesn’t come with its own satellite navigation system, and it does not have lane keep assist. If you are going to travel long distances and perhaps into areas that are not covered by mobile phones, these two items would be particularly helpful.

Driving impressions

The initial feeling of climbing into this big vehicle and getting use to the driving, is one of being very aware of its large size. However, after driving for some time on the open highway. You’re feelings are soon dominated by ones of comfort and security, particularly with the driver aids.

We drove the vehicle on some graded dirt roads and there is no doubt it was very competent in this situation. We asked Shawn Norwood how much of a rugged off-road vehicle it has been designed to be.

He noted the inclusion of an automatic locking rear differential and the Z71 off road suspension with twin tube shock absorbers. The departure angles are 28.5° front and 23.6° rear and the ground clearance is 251 millimetres. But Shawn admits that it is not intended for the most extreme off-roading situations. Which in reality is a very limited market. Most people think rough off-roading is going down a well graded dirt road.

The important point is that even if you are going to a rural location that is off the bitumen. To maximise your enjoyment it is important to arrive without being too stressed and tired. For camping and family holidaying then, this is a vehicle that copes particularly well.

Fuel economy

Such a large vehicle with such good power will have a high fuel consumption rate. Chevrolet tell us that the vehicle has not been rated yet and one wonders if they would rush to promote the official figure.

With a mixture of general driving and towing, we saw a figure of over 22 litres per 100 kilometres. And there had been reports from overseas of higher figures when towing all the time.

The vehicle has 136 litre fuel tank which at $2.00 a litre means $272 to fill. And if the price reaches $2.20, as it has recently, then that’s just a smidgen under $300.

Conclusions

The Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty is undoubtedly a vehicle that provides a big image. It might well be owned by tradespeople who want to make a statement about their seniority or the success of their business.

But Chevrolet hasn’t as yet gone into giving the giving their vehicles hyper macho names. Like Pro 4X, Rouge or Raptor as is the case with some more traditional Utes.

So it carves a niche in the market as a large, comfortable, and competent four-wheel drive utility. That would make touring a comfortable experience, if you can afford to buy and operate one of these vehicles.

The 2500 Silverado heavy duty has a list price of $163,000 plus on road costs.

Subaru Solterra is an all new all electric AWD SUV. Not something we usually write about here at OzRoamer. But the Solterra has proven that BEV SUV’s can be both electric and fun off road as well.

Subaru Solterra EV AWD driving off road 1I recently attended the launch where the drive program took in a mix of driving styles. This included motorway driving, winding hilly back roads and an interesting off-road track. This was courtesy of the Scenic Rim Adventure Park, about an hour’s drive from the Gold Coast.

Full details of the launch drive and Solterra can be found HERE

The Solterra is different to almost every other battery electric SUV. Most of them are highway cruisers.

The Solterra is a Subaru, so it has the adventure DNA running through it.

On the drive program we also had the Outback, Forester and Crosstrek. The full model range was on display to show just how the Solterra fits in.

Motor and drivetrain

Solterra features a high-capacity 71.4kWh battery. NEDC range is estimated at 485km. A more realistic range would be 450km, but that will need to be evaluated on a longer weeks drive program.

Power is 160kW and torque is 337Nm. This drives all four wheels through the Subaru Symmetrical AWD system, with Dual Mode X-Mode with NEW Grip Control Function

Subaru Solterra EV AWD driving 1

What is the Solterra like to drive on road.

Its common knowledge that electric cars can be fast. But usually not as much fun as the Solterra.

There are a number of little factors that combine to make it so.

  • Fine tuned suspension in combination with the steering wheel responsiveness to driver input.
  • AWD dynamics
  • The low centre of gravity for the battery mounting aids with dynamics.
  • The ability to choose the level of regenerative braking from the paddle shift on the steering wheel.

Let me describe one particular section of road on the drove program.

It was an undulating winding road with a few mid corner bumps thrown in.

Coming into the first corner it was downhill, so on the accelerator until we got close to the corner, a few hits of the paddle shifts to get to maximum regenerative braking. The little pedal icon on the dash told me I was in S Pedal Drive

Lift off the accelerator and the regenerative braking did its thing. Tuck the nose into the corner, all four wheels driving for almost perfect Yaw control, see the apex and accelerate out up the hill.

Beautifully balanced, smooth and all the control on your right foot. This is fun!

Mid corner bumps hardly made an impact on the composure.

On the undulating sections, wind the regenerative braking right down and it cruises along just fine thanks.

The Solterra isn’t outright fast but it hums along nicely and is engaging to drive.

What about off road.

Subaru are rightly proud of the adventurous nature of their vehicles. Regular readers will know just how far you can take a Subaru off road in the right hands. They will go further off road than any other AWD SUV.

So, it made sense to take along the range on the drive day to not only reinforce how good they are but just where the Solterra sits in comparison.

The section of track we took at Scenic Rim Adventure Park was challenging for road-based SUVs. However, all the Subaru’s, including the Solterra took it in their stride without fuss.

The Solterra has 212mm ground clearance. Crosstrek has 220mm. Forester has 220mm and Outback has 213mm ground clearance.

Subaru Solterra EV AWD Touring off road track driving 5

Some Perspective

Let’s put that into perspective. The Toyota HiLux SR5 has 216mm, Toyota LandCruiser Prado has 220mm. Nissan X-Trail has 187mm, BMW Ix1 e-drive has 170mm and Mercedes Benz EQA has 209mm ground clearance.

The major factor limiting the Solterra off road is approach and departure angles and road-based tyres.

Underneath the Solterra is almost completely smooth. There just isn’t anything that hangs down to get caught up.

I’m assured by the technical guys at Subaru, that the housing for the battery is super strong and reinforced. So minor scrapes and bumps aren’t an issue.

The permanent Symmetrical AWD system with two stage X-Mode elevates the Solterra to a class above almost every other electric SUV.

Downhill it simply kept everything in check without any fuss or complaint.

Uphill the new grip control is interesting. It works from 2-10knh in two kmh increments and will hold the speed at the selection.

The 360-degree camera was a bonus on the track as there were a few sections where I couldn’t see wheel placement and its crucial in the Solterra.

So, the Crosstrek is better off road, but the Solterra holds its own with pride.

Well, here is an electric SUV that I would actually consider taking off road.

Don’t mistake this for a rugged SUV, but it will allow a lot more adventurous driving than you may expect.

It may prove an adventurous alternative for EV buyers that want to do more, within range limitations obviously.

Driving Performance

The natural characteristics of BEVs have been combined with Subaru’s legendary features to elevate the driving experience.

Dual Mode X-Mode

Dual mode X-Mode with added new Grip Control function is made available for both Solterra variants. The two modes available are ‘Snow/Dirt’ and ‘Deep Snow/Mud’ and can be activated with a press of a button:

  • Snow/Dirt Mode – achieves a fine balance between slippery surface and ground covering ability for driving on slippery surfaces. Suppresses slipping and enhances stability. On bumpy surfaces applies brakes on spinning wheels to produce an LSD effect.
  • Deep Snow/Mud – causes the tyres to slip and the vehicle to drive in a manner that works through the snow or mud, when driving on softer surfaces. On bumpy roads, applies brakes on spinning wheels to produce an LSD effect.

Working in conjunction with Subaru’s legendary all-wheel drive system, the purpose of X-Mode is to increase traction and control under difficult road conditions.

Subaru Solterra EV AWD Touring off road track driving 1

Grip Control (new to Subaru)

The Grip Control function of X-Mode is only operational when X-Mode is active. It works like cruise control at low speeds, designed to maintain a constant speed of approximately 2-10 km/h in steps of 2 km/hr to prevent slipping on rough roads, on uphill or flat roads. This function helps the driver to concentrate on steering when traversing rough roads.

Subaru Solterra EV AWD Touring off road track driving 4

Drive Mode

Owners can select from three acceleration characteristic models, Power, Normal and Eco.

  • Normal – suitable for normal driving conditions in urban areas.
  • ECO – suitable for driving with a focus on power consumption. Compared to ‘normal’ mode, this helps reduce power consumption by moderating the drive force in response to the acceleration pedal being depressed, and by reducing the operation of the air conditioner (heating/cooling).
  • Power – suitable for crisp handling, such as when driving on mountainous or winding roads. Motor control hastens the response to the acceleration pedal being depressed, for sporty driving with enhanced acceleration performance.

Subaru Solterra EV AWD Touring off road track driving 7

Subaru Solterra Final Thoughts

Yep, I like the Solterra. Its fun to drive, packed with all the goodies people like and feels comfortable.

Subaru Solterra is the first electric SUV that I would consider taking off road.

It is a Subaru, so you would expect that.

On the test drive it performed almost as well as the Crosstrek on the off-road section and that’s high praise indeed. You could also tow a lightweight trailer or seadoo.

]]>
Mitsubishi Triton – I have recently been at the launch of the all new Triton 4WD Ute. Mitsubishi launched the Triton in Adelaide and surrounds.

2024 Mitsubishi Triton GSR Yambuki Orange driving off road 2

The launch took in a mix of suburban peak hour traffic, motorway cruising, hilly back roads and a specialised 4WD property where we tested the Tritons various aspects of off-roading.

The specialised property was Eagle View 4WD Track, which is a bit over an hours drive from Adelaide. This is a self drive 4WD track through a Private Conservation Area. The track is designed to be a scenic drive through rough and rugged country side. Access to the track requires a 4WD vehicle with low range.

The owner there Brenton, is a genuine Aussie bloke that loves his property and enjoys families taking the time to explore his 4WD tracks.

After this mix of driving, the all-new Triton should squash any doubts that buyers have about its ability to compete within the segment.

To coincide with the release of the Triton, Mitsubishi are also refocusing on the customer experience. Mitsubishi are looking to delivering a premium ownership proposition. From vehicle specification, quality and value to the dealership experience and aftersales support.

The Australian market is important to global sales, coming in third overall. In recognition of that, there has been extensive localised testing and improvements.

The launch models are the dual cab Pickup models only. Others will be coming a bit later.

Mitsubishi Triton Video Review

What is good?

  • Upgraded design both inside and outside.
  • Improved towing Capability
  • Improved steering responsiveness

What is not so good?

  • Fiddly to turn off intrusive safety features.
  • Blind spot with thick ‘A’ pillar and large external mirror
  • No soft opening on tailgate and no tie down points at front of tub

Instead of the Triton buyers could look at:

It’s a competitive segment.

There is of course the popular Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger 2.0L, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, Nissan Navara, SsangYong Musso, LDV T60,

2024 Mitsubishi Triton GLS front grill 1

Lets chat about the all new Mitsubishi Triton

What does the new Mitsubishi Triton look like?

All new Triton is about 130mm longer in wheelbase and 50mm wider in track than the outgoing model.

It now takes on the bigger bolder American Pickup style with a high squared off grill and bonnet.

The grill dominates the appearance, which is direct contrast to the model it replaces.

The bonnet has a sense of purpose.

The squared look continues with the wheel arches that give the profile a muscular look, that flows through to the rear tailgate. One note is that the tailgate isn’t a soft open style, and it drops heavily. That’s an easy fix, but these days all manufacturers should have it as standard.

The other thing to note is that frontal tie points are high in the tub. Like a few others, that’s pretty useless. They are called tie DOWN points for a reason. If you have something flat, like a flat pack piece of furniture, you can’t actually tie it down to the bed.

However, you can fit a 1200mm pallet between the wheel arches with a tub liner installed. That’s practical.

Its chalk and cheese to the outgoing model. That look was a major part pf why the Ranger became so popular. Perhaps it will do the same for the Triton.

In any case I like the new style.

2024 Mitsubishi Triton GSR Yambuki Orange interior seats and layout compilation

What is inside the Triton like.

A compete revamp. The old model was well and truly dated. It’s based on a 3 horizontal axis design.

Front seats are particularly comfortable, you sit well in them not on them. It’s a high seating position. All drivers’ seats across the range have electronic lumbar adjustment, which is awesome for my aging back.

In front of the driver is a thick, compact steering wheel that enhances the responsive feel of the Triton.

Drivers’ instruments are clear and easy to read with a traditional twin outer dial and middle MFD design.

You can cycle through the MFD for a multitude of information sets. Quite handy.

The central stack still has buttons, levers, and dials, which I like. They are well laid out but easy to use and you can find what you want quickly.

Often the digital replacements look fancy but aren’t as practical.

The Central touch screen has excellent resolution and touch sensitivity.

A personal note, I’m more a fan of an integrated style, rather than the stuck on top tablet style that is in the Triton. But others at the launch quite liked it so there’s that.

There is plenty of storage, the centre console can hold 6 bottles. Door trims hold large bottle and a folder. Like a few Utes now there are clever dash slide out cup holders on the GSR

2024 Mitsubishi Triton GLS rear seat occupant

Rear seats

The rear seats are especially comfortable. They tend to wrap around the outer two occupants. Like all Utes, the middle passenger isn’t so well looked after.

I sat in the rear for a longer drive and my 190cm frame that is larger than the average bear nestled in without fuss. Plenty of headroom, kneeroom and my upper shoulders and head was well supported.

Many Utes, even top spec models have a relatively flat rear seat, not so the Triton.

There are grab handles everywhere which helps entry and exit.

The all around visibility is pretty good, but you do notice the bigger frontal area and the ‘A’ pillar and external rear view mirror does form a slight blind spot.

2024 Mitsubishi Triton GSR Yambuki Orange infotainment and connectivity 1

What about Infotainment and connectivity technology

New-Gen Triton’s user interface is intuitively designed and thoroughly modern with a 9.0-inch digital touch screen fitted range-wide.

Featuring embedded satellite navigation with Android Auto and Wireless Apple CarPlay, as well as Bluetooth phone and audio, DAB and two USB inputs (1 x USB-A, and 1 x USB-C for the first time in Triton), New-Gen Triton seamlessly connects occupants to the outside world.

Charging devices on-the-go is also easier with Qi wireless smartphone charging making its Triton debut. Located in the centre console, this charging pad at a maximum of 15 watts.

A USB port rating increase from 1.5 to 2.4 amps (USB-A) and 3.0 amps (USB-C) further supports device charging.

A four-speaker audio system is standard on GLX and GLX+ models, while GLS and GSR receive premium six-speaker audio.

The dashboard meter ‘multi-information’ display grows from 4.2 inches in the previous generation to 7.0 inches in New-Gen Triton. Warning sounds are played through the speaker system rather than a buzzer as before, and the display now offers a wider range of information, including wiper mode, lighting status and the selected drive mode. It also greets occupants with a digital start up vehicle animation.

Also standard range-wide is the Multi Around Monitor, which utilises digital camera moving object detection, a wider view for both front and rear cameras and an improved bird’s eye view.

  2024 Mitsubishi Triton GLS engine

Mitsubishi Triton engine and drivetrain

The big news is the improved power and torque output for the Triton.

Still with the same 2.4L 4-cylinder engine that now comes with a bi-turbo. A smaller turbo to boost up to 1,000rpm, then the second kicks in for more top end performance.

The Triton now has 150kW of power @ 3,500 rpm and a handy 470 Nm of torque from 1,500 – 2,750 rpm. A headline figure of 500Nm would have been handy. But the torque comes in at a low 1,500 rpm and is flat through to 2,750 rpm. This means that its healthy, especially for towing and off road.

Overall there has been a 10% improvement in fuel economy as well

2024 Mitsubishi Triton GSR Yambuki Orange 4WD Controls 1

Mitsubishi has stuck with the proven 6 Sp Aisin sports automatic transmission. This matched with the clever Super Select 11 4WD system is a proven and robust combination.

The transmission has been fine tuned to match the wider drive modes available.

A six-speed manual will also be offered on some variants, post-launch.

A new engine Auto Stop & Go System further supports efficiency and a 17-litre AdBlue tank – a first for Triton – further reduces NOx emissions.

2024 Mitsubishi Triton 4WD Drive Super Select 11

Triton drive modes

On 4 x 4 variants, a centre-console ‘DRIVE MODE’ button enables access to an even greater depth of capability.

As part of Triton’s overarching All Wheel Control system, there are seven available drive modes. These work in conjunction with Mitsubishi’s famed Super Select 4WD-II system, which continues to offer 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc drivetrain settings.

The tables below summarise New-Gen Triton’s All Wheel Control systems:

2024 Mitsubishi Triton 4WD Drive modes 1

The ability to switch from high-range 2WD to 4WD on the fly has long been a hallmark of Mitsubishi’s 4WD systems.

In addition, the versatile Super Select 4WD-II system’s Torsen centre differential enables a 40/60 front/rear drive distribution when it is unlocked, giving strong traction on slippery surfaces without reducing on-road agility, even on dry sealed roads.

For even more traction and control when driving off-road, ‘4HLc’ – high-range four-wheel drive with locked centre differential – gives a 50/50 locked drive split, front and rear. The torque sensing centre diff has no bind. There is also active Yaw control.

‘4LLc’ utilises the transfer case to engage low-range gearing along with the locked centre differential. Using 4LLc also allows engagement of the rear differential lock, via an accessible console-mounted button, for maximum traction.

Couple of quick notes

  • Engaging the rear diff locks turns off ASC on the front wheels
  • Sand mode doesn’t automatically turn off ASC.
  • Torque vectoring is for the front wheels only.

What is the upgraded suspension like?

First up let me say the ride and handling of the new Triton is significantly better. Its smoother and more compliant. There was minimal harsh rebound experienced on the test drive.

This was from a mix of motorway driving, back country roads, gravel roads and a multitude of testing 4WD conditions. I drove the Triton with no weight in the back, which usually means the ride is a bit bumpy, not so.

The improved ride was achieved through testing over 100 combinations of front and rear suspension options.

Specific changes are:

  • increased front shock absorber diameter to complement the new, high-mount location for the front suspension’s upper wishbones.
  • The new shock absorbers feature 36mm cylinders (compared to 32mm in the previous generation) for improved control,
  • an impressive increase in rebound stroke length (from 68.4mm to 90.7mm) is also realised.
  • In the rear, MMC engineers focused on reducing unsprung mass while improving strength through using high tensile spring steel.
  • As a result, the standard rear suspension layout has reduced from five to three leaves; the heavy duty system from six to four.
  • The first leaf remains the same thickness as before, while the additional leaves are of greater thickness.
  • The rear shock absorber cylinders have also increased from 30mm to 36mm and feature a revised oil seal for additional strength and longer service life.

Wheel and tyre packages

The New-Gen Mitsubishi Triton’s significantly uprated suspension system is complemented by new-design 17- and 18-inch wheels.

The workhorse GLX 4 x 2 receives 17-inch steel wheels fitted with 265/65R17 highway-terrain tyres. While GLX 4 x 4 gains 265/65/R17 all-terrain tyres.

GLX+ benefits from a 17-inch alloy wheel design with 265/65/R17 all-terrains.

Moving to the premium GLS grade brings a sophisticated, multi-spoke alloy wheel design wrapped in 265/60/R18 highway rubber.

The flagship GSR gains a unique black-finish alloy of similar design.

2024 Mitsubishi Triton GSR Yambuki Orange driving on road 1

What is the new Triton like to drive?

On road

In summary its significantly better on road and gravel surfaces.

This comes from a combination of factors that all add marginal improvements that add up to major improvements. It’s the jigsaw philosophy.

The electronic power steering is leaps and bounds ahead of the old model. It has particularly good responsiveness and the feel of the smaller, thick rimmed steering wheel adds to the improved feel.

I would have to drive it back to back with some others, but the steering response would go close to best in class.

Longer and wider chassis means that the Triton adopts a wider stance and feels more connected to the road. Its smoother and quieter as well

Revised suspension keeps everything tidy. Mid corner bumps, when at reasonable speed will result in a slight skipping, but overall, its way better than the previous model.

Higher outputs from the engine, and low delivery of torque also means more responsiveness and relaxed driving. It’s not a sports Ute but will hum along nicely when asked.

Im a driver that likes to turn off driver assist features as I find many of them intrusive. It takes steps to turn off the facial recognition settings and driver assistance. Unfortunately, you need to do that every time you start the engine.

2024 Mitsubishi Triton GSR Yambuki Orange driving off road 1

Off road

Off road on the 4WD trails and testing track, the Triton felt always composed. It did scrape its belly once or twice. But that is to be expected of a standard Ute where we went.

We tested the Triton on a couple of rutted, soft dirt inclines with deep mogul style holes. These are designed to test wheel articulation and grip.

The traction control system, when left to its own devices performed better than locked rear diffs on occasions.

On steep dirt descents, we tested both Low rage with the transmission locked in M1 and alternatively, the hill descent control. Both worked a treat.

The hill descent could well be close to best in class. It went about its business effortlessly and quietly. No complaining, burping or farting like many others.

I have to say though that the efficiency of low range M1 transmission, would mean that it wouldn’t get much use.

The higher torque output means that more of the control rests directly on your right foot and that’s a good thing.

In tight spots where visibility is restricted the surround camera is a bonus to help with wheel placement and detecting obstacles.

The overall impression is that the new Triton is a particularly tidy unit indeed.

2024 Mitsubishi Triton 4WD Ute safety features

Triton Safety Features

Redesigned chassis frame

Safety starts with a stiff chassis frame.

2024 Mitsubishi Triton 4WD Ute safety features

Featuring high tensile steel, the New-Gen Triton’s chassis frame Triton has been comprehensively redesigned to increase torsional and bending rigidity. The new design’s increased cross-sectional width absorbs energy more effectively, reducing potential passenger impact.

MMC engineers upgraded the front cross member and also added-in a secondary cross member for additional support. A ‘crash box’ structure was also added to the side rails for added occupant protection.

Safer night driving: LED Headlight (Multi Projectors) and Auto High Beam

The New-Gen Triton comes with Multi Projectors for a wider illumination range for safer driving at night.

The vehicle also has the ability to detect vehicles in front and will automatically switch back and forth from high beam to low beam to ensure the driver is able to keep their hands on the wheel.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

The intuitive Tyre Pressure Monitoring System on the New-Gen Triton has been introduced to support safe and fuel-efficient driving.

This new system displays the pressure of each individual tyre on the driver display and will warn the driver of low pressure tyres.

Intuitive active safety systems for passenger protection

The New-Gen Triton offers intuitive active safety systems with everything from Forward Collision Mitigation to Traffic Sign Recognition.

2024 Mitsubishi Triton 4WD Ute safety features

Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM) with pedestrian & cyclist detection

The Forward Collision Mitigation system detects obstructions ahead of the vehicle which could cause potential collisions and warns the driver via audio and visual alert. The vehicle will automatically apply brakes to avoid or reduce collision impact.

This system is further enhanced on the New-Gen Triton by also detecting vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists in front. The added Junction Assist function is capable of detecting a combination of pedestrians and cyclists.

Rear Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB)

The New-Gen Triton now features the Rear Automatic Emergency Braking safety system. This feature detects obstructions behind the vehicle and warns the driver via visual and audio alerts. The vehicle will automatically apply brakes to avoid or reduce collision impact.

2024 MitsubIshi Triton 4WD Ute safety features 1

Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alerts

The New-Gen Triton will retain the Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) feature as well as the new addition of Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA) exemplifying Mitsubishi Motors’ ongoing commitment to enhancing safety systems.

The Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) is capable of detecting a vehicle to the rear when the New-Gen Triton is reversing. RCTA will alert the driver via a warning message on the multi- information display, a buzzer sound and blinking warnings on the side mirrors.

The Front Cross Traffic Alert (FCTA)* will detect an approaching vehicle at an intersection and warn the driver via visual and audio alert.

*Note, the FCTA system is available as a no-cost option for customers not fitting a front protection bar.

2024 Mitsubishi Triton 4WD Ute safety features

Traffic Sign Recognition & Speed Limit Assist

The New-Gen Triton comes equipped with an intuitive Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) function which is capable of identifying speed limit signs through a front camera. The multi-information display will show the current speed limit. On roads where no speed limit signs are present the vehicle will display the speed limit that is programmed into the navigation.

If the driver exceeds the speed limit the Traffic Sign Recognition system will warn the driver with a visual alert.

Speed Limit Assist operates when the engine is running and utilises the Traffic Sign Recognition function to identify the current speed limit. The driver can easily apply the new speed limit as the vehicle’s maximum speed with one button press.

Driver Monitoring System

A class first, the New-Gen Triton will feature the driver monitoring system which monitors the drivers face utilizing a camera on the steering column to detect driver drowsiness or fatigue (Drowsiness, Micro-sleep, Sleep).

If it detects distraction a meter display will alert the driver. If the system detects drowsiness or fatigue, Forward Collision Mitigation parameters are automatically adjusted to operate earlier. Additionally, in the case that fatigue is detected the Lane Departure Warning will also operate earlier than usual.

However, it takes three steps into the screen menu to turn this off and have to do every time.

Lane Departure Prevention

The 24MY Triton will receive an upgraded Lane Departure system which previously only warned the driver that the vehicle was drifting out of its lane. The upgraded Lane Departure Prevention system monitors the lane markings on the road and will steer the vehicle back into the lane if it starts to drift out.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Upgraded from Cruise Control to Adaptive Cruise Control on the New-Gen Triton. It can be selected when needed fortunately. Adaptive Cruise Control maintains the set cruise control speed and utilises radar technology to detect and maintain a safe driving distance from the vehicle in front.

  • Five-variant LandCruiser Prado introduces 48-volt technology across model range
  • New Altitude variant delivers enhanced off-road performance and rugged styling
  • All-new LandCruiser Prado range arrives in Australia mid-year

Toyota Prado Australian Details

Australia’s favourite large SUV is set to become even more appealing for customers when the all-new LandCruiser Prado range arrives in Australia in mid-2024, with a new off-road focussed variant, 48-volt technology across the range, and retro-inspired styling.

The five-variant Prado range brings the rugged capability worthy of a LandCruiser name, with major improvements to driveability, technology and design.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the all-new LandCruiser Prado will continue to resonate with Australian families and adventurers.

“Over decades the Prado has become a favourite for Australians in need of an SUV able to transport the whole family during the week and go off the beaten path on the weekend, all with signature Toyota reliability,” he said.

“The new-generation Prado will continue the legacy forged by its predecessors when it arrives here later this year, with the addition of 48-volt technology and the new Altitude grade making it more appealing than ever.”

The all-new LandCruiser Prado range will build upon the line-up of the current generation with GX, GXL, VX and flagship Kakadu grades, and the addition of a new high-end Altitude variant aimed at adventure-focused customers looking to take their Prado further off-road.

Next up is the luxuriously specified VX, identified by its 20-inch premium dark metallic alloy wheels, body-coloured front and rear bumpers, over-fender moulding and rear guard trim, and bi-LED headlamps with dynamic auto-leveling and adaptive high-beam system7 technology.

The VX provides greater amenity for customers with leather-accented seats with driver seat power lumbar support and memory, four-way front passenger power adjustment, power-adjustable steering wheel, carpet floor mats, a refrigerated console box and tyre pressure monitor.

A full 12.3-inch colour MID display has been added along with a premium 14-speaker JBL®9 audio system, while additional driving assistance for both on and off-road includes Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) and five-mode Drive Mode Select, Multi-Terrain Select, and in a first for Toyota, the Multi-Terrain Monitor system which provides a comprehensive view of the vehicle’s underfloor and surrounds when off-roading.7

LandCruiser Prado Altitude

The new Altitude grade makes full use of the LandCruiser Prado’s excellent fundamental off-road capability, introducing a number of exclusive features designed to tackle the toughest terrain the country has to offer.

The Altitude version offers enhanced capability with the fitment of 18-inch matte grey alloy wheels with Toyo Open Country all-terrain tyres, a rear locking differential, and a new stabiliser disconnect mechanism7 (replacing AVS) which provides an extra 10 per cent of wheel articulation to help maximise traction on uneven surfaces.

With a tough exterior look to match its performance, the Altitude variant features black door handles and tailgate garnish, black over-fender moulding, a moon roof and the option of two-tone colourways10.

Available exclusively in five-seat configuration, the Altitude builds on the specification of the VX and inside, adds a digital rearview mirror, heated steering wheel and head-up display.

LandCruiser Prado Kakadu

Crowning the LandCruiser Prado range is the flagship seven-seat Kakadu, which also adds features over the VX including a panoramic moon roof, illuminated side steps, heated and ventilated rear seats, heated steering wheel, adjustable driver’s seat thigh support, digital rearview mirror, head-up display and a rear torque-sensing limited-slip differential to enhance handling when cornering.

Engine and drivetrain

All Prado variants are powered by the same 150kW, 500Nm 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder powertrain with 48-volt technology, paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Every Prado offers full-time all-wheel drive with a lockable torque-sensing Torsen®9 centre differential and low-range gearing, with a strong 3,500kg braked towing capacity11 across the range.

A total of eight exterior paint colours will be offered on the Prado including the new Altitude-exclusive Tanami Taupe and Ningaloo Blue, optionally available with a white roof.12

Further details on the all-new LandCruiser Prado including pricing and full specification will be announced closer to the model’s arrival in mid-2024.

2024 Toyota LandCruiser Prado overseas model shown

Toyota Prado August 14 2023 update

Toyota have just shown their new generation Prado with improved performance, mechanical upgrades, and more rugged styling.

2024 Toyota LandCruiser Prado 1Before listeners get too excited, the new Prado isn’t due here until mid-2024 and pricing hasn’t been announced yet. But I can tell you a bit about it.

The main improvement is that the Prado now shares the same platform as the 300 series LandCruiser. Which means in this case the same wheelbase.

Other improvements include better wheel travel from the revised suspension, along with better ride and handling.

It now comes with electronic steering, along with a muscular styling redesign. Some would call it a boxy design, but its certainly a departure from the existing model.

The new Prado comes with the familiar 2.8L turbo diesel engine. This produces with 150 kilowatts of power and 500 Newton metres of torque. This is matched to a new direct shift eight speed automatic transmission.

The engine now comes with mild hybrid technology to improve fuel economy.

The Prado and the Pajero were doubly responsible for the surge in larger SUV popularity as a family transport in the mid to late 90”s. It’s been hugely successful, but with changing buyer tastes, will the new model be as successful.

I like the muscular style and having a true 4WD as an alternative to the urban based SUVs is always a good thing.

More Toyota Prado new generation details

  • New-generation LandCruiser Prado unveiled with new design, platform and technology
  • All new model retains the essence of LandCruiser performance for lifestyle-focused families
  • Due on sale in Australia mid-2024

The all-new Toyota LandCruiser Prado family SUV has made its world premiere. Bringing with it significant mechanical upgrades, enhanced performance, and rugged styling changes. Planned arrival in Australian showrooms mid next year.

Since its arrival in 1996, the Prado has been one of Australia’s most popular large SUVs. Thanks to its blend of capability, amenity and passenger-oriented comfort. The all-new model continues that brief with go-anywhere performance and a design that symbolises the essence of the LandCruiser.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the new Prado provides all the hallmarks of a LandCruiser that customers love.

“Australian customers appreciate the vast capability of the LandCruiser Prado. From use as a family vehicle, to off-roading, towing and long-distance touring, which is evidenced by its huge popularity,” Mr Hanley said.

“The all-new Prado takes everything that customers love about the Prado to a new level. With even greater performance, capability and technology, as well as bold new styling inside and out.”

New generation Prado

The new-generation Prado adopts a new design direction that fuses traditional and contemporary styling cues. Employing horizontal lines inspired by LandCruisers of yesteryear to deliver on the theme of functional beauty.

The front end is based around a rectangular grille and tri-beam headlights, with a low-set front cowl to improve forward visibility.

Muscular wheelarches and strong horizontal lines provide a sense of strength, with a low beltline that further improves visibility for occupants.

At the rear, the Prado features a vertically oriented tailgate and simple tail-light signature to complement the front end. It has silver lower bumpers at both the front and rear of the vehicle.

Dimensions and platform

Measuring 4,920mm long, 1,988mm wide and 1,860mm tall, the all-new Prado is 95mm longer and wider, and 10mm taller than before. Its 2,850mm wheelbase is 60mm longer than before, and now matches the length of the LandCruiser 300 Series.1

The Prado now shares its underpinnings with the 300 Series, riding on the rugged and sophisticated TNGA-F ladder-frame chassis. This is 50 per cent more rigid than the current-generation Prado, helping to increase overall vehicle rigidity by 30 per cent.

The modern and stiff platform allows for improved suspension performance. With greater wheel articulation for off-roading and excellent handling and ride comfort on-road.

2024 Toyota LandCruiser Prado interior 2

Wheel articulation is improved further with Toyota’s brand-new stabilizer-bar control system which allows the front stabiliser bar to be disconnected for excellent wheel articulation, while enhanced functionality for the multi-terrain select and multi-terrain monitor systems help the Prado go even further off-road.

The adoption of electric power steering provides a crisper steering feel and enhanced low-speed manoeuvrability on-road, maximises control when off-roading, and allows compatibility with active safety systems such as lane trace assist.

Engine and transmission

In Australia, the all-new Prado will be offered with the 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine enhanced with 48-volt technology to help improve fuel consumption in urban settings.

Producing 150kW of power and 500Nm of torque, the 1GD engine drives all four wheels via a new Direct Shift-8AT eight-speed automatic transmission which replaces the existing six-speed unit.

2024 Toyota LandCruiser Prado interior 3

Interior

Inside, the Prado employs a clean, stylish and functional interior design with dual digital screens for the instrument cluster and multimedia system, and an intuitive layout for the switches that group basic functions together.

The Prado will be available with either five- or seven-seat layouts depending on variant and will be offered with a full suite of Toyota Safety Sense active safety technologies2.

Further details on the all-new LandCruiser Prado including local specification will be made available closer to the vehicle’s Australian launch in 2024.

1 Vehicle specifications and features are based on overseas model. Australian specifications and features may differ
2 Driver assist feature. Only operates under certain conditions. Check your Owner’s Manual for explanation of limitations. Please drive safely.

Mazda BT-50 SP – Recently I drove the Mazda BT-50 4WD Ute with the SP option pack. This caters for buyers that want extra features but with manufacturer warranty.

Mazda BT-50 SP front quarter 5The BT-50 Ute is a robust and capable 4WD with a 3.0L turbo diesel engine that provides 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque. It drives though a shift in the fly dual range 4WD system and a 6 speed AT. The BT-50 makes an excellent towing vehicle with 3500kg rating and low torque delivery.

The BT-50 SP pack comes with stylish Black and driftwood leather seat trim, 18-inch alloy wheels and roof rails. In addition, there is upgraded lifted suspension with twin tube shock absorbers.

Up front there is an integrated Lightforce light bar that has excellent brightness but needs better calibration with the automatic headlights.

The BT-50 SP comes with wireless smart phone connectivity, heated front seats, and a comfortable thick rimmed steering wheel.

Its compliant around town and was at home on dirt roads, forest trails and the beach.

The Mazda BT-50 SP is priced from around $68,500 plus the usual costs and is a reliable, robust 4WD Ute.

Mazda BT-50 SP Video review

More thoughts about the Mazda BT-50 SP

  • I like the styling, its more SUV than big American Ute
  • The SP enhancements add both style and practicality
  • The raised suspension provides
    • smoother ride on dirt roads
    • more compliant ride
    • better on road handling
    • better ground clearance
    • improved rebound calibration
  • The black and driftwood interior adds subtle ambience
  • Front seats are heated with additional lumbar support
  • Wireless CarPlay is good, wireless charging would be better
  • The Lightforce light bar provides excellent illumination, but the auto calibration for dipping etc. needs some work
  • 18 inch alloy wheels are best for off road work
  • Like its close cousin, the Isuzu D-MAX, THE bt-50 is an excellent tow vehicle
  • 2500kg and 350kg tow ball rating are top of class
  • But you need to keep an eye on the GCM and payload balance
  • 3.0L turbo diesel engine has reasonable performance on road and excellent off road.
  • The low delivery of torque allows for easier towing, especially heavy loads, with reasonable economy
  • SP suspension pack enhances the towing capability of the BT-50
  • The ride and handling on dirt roads is improved and compliant
  • Over sand its a breeze, especially when it was chopped up at the entry to the beach
  • The tub liner is a handy addition.
  • I’m generally not the biggest fan of roller top tonneau, but manual ones are better

Mazda BT-50 SP suspension upgrade 1

What is good?

  • Upgraded suspension.
  • 4WD and towing Capability
  • Interior comfort

What is not so good?

  • Bit expensive
  • Central screen starting to date.
  • Turning off LKA every time

Mazda BT-50 SP towing pack

Instead of a Mazda BT-50 SP what else could I buy?

The recreational Dual Cab Ute segment is packed. And the top end is the most popular.

Buyers could look at the Isuzu D-Max X-TerrainNissan Navara Pro 4X WarriorToyota HiLux Rogue, or the HiLux GR SportFord Ranger Wildtrak, or the all new Mitsubishi Triton

Mazda BT-50 SP rear quarter 5

Mazda BT-50 SP final thoughts

I like the BT-50 SP with the enhancement packs. They add a level of ambience and practicality to an otherwise good Ute.

Its compliant around town and was at home on dirt roads, forest trails and the beach.

The price is getting up there, but also good value compared to the escalating prices from competitors.

Kia’s enhanced Sorento cements its place as part of the modern Kia range. The popular family SUV has been a multiple OzRoamer COTY Award Nominee and winner in previous years.

2024 Kia Sorento PE

  • Refreshed exterior and interior design
  • Upgraded comfort and convenience technology
  • Now with Kia Connect and Over The Air updates
  • Additional safety features

Model Year 2024 Sorento

The upgraded Model Year 2024 Sorento Product Enhancement (PE) is arriving in Kia dealer showrooms in January. The new Sorento brings advances to the exterior and interior design, comfort and convenience technology, and provides additional safety features.

The range will remain consistent with the outgoing model continuing with the existing four powertrains. The 3.5L FWD petrol and 2.2L AWD diesel variants will be available across all four trim offerings (S, Sport, Sport+ and GT-Line). The Hybrid (HEV) and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) variants available in the top GT-Line specification only.

Kia Sorento Drive impressions from launch

On the launch we drove a variety of models and engines. From the petrol engine FWD Sport through to the diesel powered AWD GT-Line.

The Sorento has been for many years a showcase for localised suspension tuning. The collaboration Kia has with tuning guru Graeme Gambold has proved to be a master stroke.

The latest tune somehow manages to improve on what was already an excellent setting.

This comes from the ZF Suspension which allows selective damping depending on road surface.

The shock absorbers have specialised valves introduced which results in differentiated ride comfort from body control.

Combine this retune with revised steering mapping and you have one of the most responsive larger AWD SUVs on the market.

We drove the Sorento over a variety of surfaces, motorway, back roads, gravel and mild forest trails. I would say the ride is slightly firmer than the model it replaces, not a bad thing.

The suspension tune is the same for both petrol and diesel engine versions.

Now often Motoring Journalists like to use some high modality words to convey the impression we know what we are talking about.

I’m going to use some of them now to describe just how good the Sorento is.

At all times, over all surfaces the Sorento remained composed. Mid corner bumps, rutted potholes and gravel ditches did nothing to deviate from that composure.

The rack mounted power driven steering has better self centering and provides the right level of resistance and feel.

The balance between suspension reaction and driver inputs to steering and power allowed for some engaging driving.

Remember this is a seven seat family SUV from a Korean manufacturer. Yet it feels more like a sports SUV from Europe in its ride and handling. That is a good thing.

2024 Kia Sorento GT Line app

Other quick thoughts from the launch

  • Kia have made a great SUV even better
  • The improvements to infotainment connectivity and technology raises the Kia to another level
  • The world is becoming App mad and Kia is joining the evolution. Over the air (OTA) updates, remote start functionality, fleet driver records etc. are the benefits that come with that.
  • The large 12.3 inch curved (model specific) central screen is awesome. Apparently you can move the icons around, but I didn’t have time to play with that on the initial drive.
  • Finally wireless Apple CarPlay is across all models – woohoo
  • The Sorento now comes with a larger 10 inch HUD with more functionality, but like most it still polarizes out with sunglasses.
  • Subtle things like the new soft touch for A.C controls add to the ambience, as do more choices for mood lighting.
  • Kia have again apparently made it easier to remove those incredibly annoying safety bings and bongs by using a favourite button. But you still need to push it every time you start,
  • I know that the regulations are moving to cater for the dumbest of the dumb when driving and Kia is not alone in this aspect, but they are seriously annoying.
  • While we are on that topic, and again Kia are not alone, the inability to switch off the radar adaptive function on cruise control is disappointing. Its been that way for a while now and a particular beef of mine with modern cars.
  • A complete move to a dial transmission shift allows a more minimalist design.
  • I really like the revised frontal treatment to be more like the stunning EV9

2024 Kia_Sorento_GT-Line041

Some quick general details about the Sorento model and sales.

  • Kia expects to sell close to 9,000 Sorento in 2024.
  • The order book is strong and currently the wait times are around 3-4 months, depending on the variant
  • Sales are about 80% diesel. Personally I would choose the diesel engine versions every time.
  • The GT-Line accounts for about 30% of sales, the ‘S’ model about 20%. So sales are fairly evenly spread across the variants.

Release schedule

Petrol and Diesel variants will be launched in this initial Sorento PE upgrade release. HEV and PHEV variants will be arriving during the first half of 2024, with specification details and pricing announced in due course.

“The award-winning fourth generation Sorento took the large SUV segment by storm when it was launched in late 2020 and with the arrival of the enhanced model, what was already really good, is now even better,” said Kia Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Damien Meredith.

“The upgrades and improvements offer significant benefits and we believe the Sorento will exceed the expectations of anyone shopping in the seven-seat SUV market.”

2024 Kia Sorento PE

Refreshed design

The new Sorento features multiple refreshed design elements creating a unique appearance. Taking design cues from the recently launched EV9 it stands proud with a new head light graphic and a cleaner radiator grille and front bumper, stylishly cementing its place as part of the modern Kia range.

The rear design has been subtly tweaked offering a more modern appearance with design improvements made to the rear bumper enhancing the overall ruggedness and rear lamps complimenting the new signature front lighting design.

The new simplistic 4” Multi-Function LCD digital display on S, Sport & Sport+ trims has been designed to replace analogue gauges to maintain a high-tech image across the range.

The dual 12.3” panoramic integrated display takes centre stage on the dashboard of the GT-Line trim and creates a luxurious ambience. The dual 12.3” Digital Cluster and Infotainment Touch Screen displays provide a pleasant driving experience through high-definition images.

The new Sorento GT-Line trim offers a Digital Centre Mirror (DCM), also present in the recently launched EV9 GT-Line. This lets users switch the interior mirror from a standard ECM to camera display for maximum rear visibility and safety.

2024 Kia Sorento PE

Kia Connectivity

Packed with functionality, Kia Connect is a 7-year complimentary connected car service that enhances safety/convenience and allows for a better customer experience. Kia Connect provides customer benefits in safety, security, convenience, connectivity, and LIVE services. Achieved by using telematics systems to transfer real time data, such as weather and traffic information, etc.

Safety Upgrades

Safety upgrades brings the introduction of Highway Driving Assist (HDA). The next-generation Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) functions only when driving on a freeway or motorway, included in Sport, Sport+ and GT-Line variants. HDA fundamentally builds on adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability. Combining with Lane Following Assist (LFA) to keep the car centred in the lane even when driving through a curve.

The new Sorento GT-Line also receives Parking Distance Warning (Front, Side, Rear) adding on side detection zones. These provide a more comprehensive warning system that will warn the driver when a collision is likely during parking.

Two new premium paint choices, Volcanic Sand Brown and Cityscape Green, have been added to the colour pallet bringing the exterior colour choices to a total of nine. They join the carried over Clear White (standard), Snow White Pearl, Mineral Blue, Steel Grey, Gravity Blue, Silky Grey & Aurora Black Pearl (premium).

The new Sorento variants will carry over the 5-star ANCAP rating from the outgoing model tested in 2020.

X-Trail Mountain Rescue – Nissan is bringing the all-wheel drive strengths of its unique e-4ORCE technology to European ski slopes this winter, with the creation of an X-Trail e-4ORCE extensively modified for mountain rescue needs.

The modifications to the X-Trail Mountain Rescue include the replacement of the wheels with snow tracks, giving confident traction on slippery pistes, while the rear seats have been removed to allow the installation of a stretcher, to allow the transportation of injured skiers to the nearest medical facility, and a seat for a medical professional.

Externally, a bespoke roof rack has been added to carry an evacuation stretcher and snow shovels. A siren, flashing light bar and powerful lights have also been embedded to the X-Trail’s roof, as well as lights on the hood.

Wider fenders front and rear have been integrated to accommodate the tracks, while at the front the bumper has been enhanced to carry a winch. A reinforced towing hook has been added to the front and rear bumpers, while footboards have been included on the side to facilitate access as the X-Trail rides 23cm higher on its track than the road-going version.

The development and construction of the X-Trail Mountain Rescue was conceived to highlight the advanced electrified twin-motor e-4ORCE all-wheel drive system with which the X-Trail is equipped.

What sets the system apart from traditional mechanical systems is that it can react to changing levels of grip in 1/10,000th of a second, approximately 1000 times quicker than a traditional all-wheel drive system, and it can adjust the distribution of power to the wheels individually, according to the available grip.

The occupants will be blissfully unaware that the e-4ORCE system is working so effectively to provide traction in all conditions, allowing peace of mind as they travel on wet urban, leafy suburban, muddy country or snowy mountain roads.

The X-Trail Mountain Rescue is supporting a campaign in five European ski resorts under the banner of “Ride Responsibly”. Nissan will promote courteous slope etiquette with the placement of digital signs which encourage snow riders to slow down where different slopes meet to reduce the risk of collision.

Similar to road-side signs that display a vehicle’s speed, the signs will monitor the speed of approaching riders and show “Thank You” for those who are approaching at a considerate speed, or “Slow Down” if their speed is judged as excessive. The X-Trail Mountain Rescue will be displayed in a glass box at the popular Italian ski resort of Cervinia.

What can be achieved

“The development of the X-Trail Mountain Rescue and the surrounding campaign is a bold and innovative way to help consumers understand the benefits of Nissan’s advanced electrified all-wheel drive system e-4ORCE. Thousands of winter sports enthusiasts passing through the five ski stations will see and understand the peace of mind and poise that X-Trail equipped with e-4ORCE delivers on the road.” said Coralie Musy, Vice President, Brand & Customer Experience, Nissan AMIEO (Africa, Middle East, India, Europe and Oceania) region.

She added: “Over and above the demonstration of the advanced Nissan technology, the campaign also has a wider purpose which is to encourage responsible behaviour among the community of winter sports enthusiasts. Nissan defies the ordinary – both in its use of technology, but also in the role it plays in society.”

The X-Trail is a family-oriented seven-seater electrified crossover. It offers an effortless EV-drive feeling thanks to e-POWER technology together with a twin-motor e-4ORCE all-wheel drive system. It is available as a five- or seven-seater, offering a convenient option for days out with extended family or friends.

The X-Trail is one of Nissan’s most successful global vehicles, with sales in more than 100 markets and has been enabling family adventures for over 20 years. The fourth generation X-Trail draws from a well-established DNA that runs through all three of the previous generations of X-Trail.
