Maxliner – On the back of selling out the first release of Toyota Hilux and Next-Gen Ford Ranger Venture canopies, Maxliner Australia has announced the release of the next Venture canopies to arrive in 2022, the Isuzu D-MAX and Mazda BT-50.

Maxliner-Mazda-BT-50-Canopy-3Q-Front The new canopy has been designed from the ground up precisely with the Australian ute market in mind and features groundbreaking specifications combined with electrifying styling.

Nigel Brownscobe, Managing Director of Maxliner and Vandapac Australia, said, “Australians are buying more utes than ever before, and canopies have turned from the tradies functional workhorse to a lifestyle accessory.”

“About 18 months ago, we sat down with our product planning team in Thailand and set them a challenge to design a canopy that offers our customers the function they require but incorporates style and class-leading specifications; the result is Venture”.

Maxliner-Venture-Canopy---D-Max-Colour-Coded

With a manufacturing facility in the heartland of ute manufacturing in Thailand, parent brand Vandapac PTY LTD produces the Venture canopy exclusively for Maxliner in Australia. However, the company has been making OEM quality vehicle accessories for over thirty years and supplies global vehicle manufacturers with genuine accessories and production parts.

Working with the manufacturing and production team in Thailand and the sales and marketing team on the ground in Australia has given Maxliner Australia the opportunity to design the Venture canopy to in way that replaces canopy features end users dislike and replaces them with considered and practical but modern features.

Mazda BT-50 Venture Badge Close Up

An example of this is replacing hard to access small side windows with easy to access large side windows. The Venture has also replaced traditional window key locks with handle-free push button entry on the rear and side windows. This can also be intergrated to the vehicles key fob. The Venture features a spoiler for good looks, but a fully reinforced steel structure roof allows a substantial load-carrying capacity, perfect for work or play.

Maxliner-Venture-Canopy---D-Max-Outside-Rear-3Q

Another way the Venture challenges traditional canopy offerings is by presenting customers with two product styling options: a conventional colour-coded painted body or a modern and aggressive black-accented version. Either style can be matched with black door moldings, flares, weather shields, side steps, and crossbars. These additions allow customers to personalise their vehicles and offer dealers further profit opportunities.

Maxliner Venture Canopy Body Colour

The Venture canopy is available now for Toyota Hilux and Next-Gen Ford Ranger, and pre-order for Isuzu D-MAX and Mazda BT-50 at Maxliner Distributors and Stockists across Australia.

Innovan Slide On Camper
The slide on camper market has a broad spectrum of styles and designs from the simple to the elaborate. The Innovan slide on camper tends towards the elaborate with its almost space pod design. Made from one piece moulded GRP Composite Roof, Base & Furniture the Innovan slide on camper is both form and function rolled into one design.

The Innovan is certainly a different looking and functioning slide on camper and while it is fairly heavy at around 700kg you get a lot of innovation built in that translates to ease of use. So easy and convenient is the Innovan system, that it takes only seconds and one single movement to change from an attractive, streamlined compartment, with a height only 1.5 metres above the floor to an enclosed living space with solid walls and a ceiling close to 3 metres high (higher than most house ceilings).

There are any number of Ute Canopy manufacturers throughout the country. The trick if finding one that does a good job and has something different about them. Well we found one such manufacturer – Ute Mate, in Mackay QLD of all places. Terry and Wendy Coad were avid campers and designed a slide on canopy that allowed them quick and easy camping but also doubled as a tradie canopy as well.

Like all good manufacturing stories the interest they generated when they were camping has led them to now build a range of canopies for a range of budgets.

Ute Mate Slide on Camper OzRoame web

The canopy we are interested in here is the Travel Mate, which is made of fibreglass construction that gives strength as well as insulation. There are two internal walls to create three airtight compartments.  Unlike a lot of ubiquitous canopies the Travel Mate has quite a pleasing style.

Candy Canvas Carry Me Camper Slide on Camper Walk in open
The Carry Me Camper Slide on Camper from Candy Canvas in Tintinara SA, has been around a while now (since 1996) and like most good designs was developed out of necessity and genuine country ingenuity and simplicity. The owners Phil and Sandy Candy were originally farmers but many years ago started their canvas business. Now they are one of the stalwarts of the industry and a more genuine couple would be hard to find.

While many slide on campers are heavily laden with unnecessary attachments the Candy Canvas Carry Me Camper has what you need without the fluff you don’t. This reflects not only a design philosophy but also the down to earth personalities of the manufacturers.

Candy Canvas Carry Me Camper Slide on Camper Walk in model other side

Essentially designed from a slide on box the single cab walk in model we are looking at here has its roots in the dual cab model with the benefit of a walk in section added to the end. This provides both convenience and extra storage for jacks etc that can be accessed from the external camper.

Candy Canvas Carry Me Camper Slide on Camper Walk in model pantry

The core box is made from 1.2 – 1.6 mm zinc annealed steel and weighs about 520kg. This is pretty good considering the size of the unit and the amount of storage area inside and internal living area. The water tank, battery and fridge slide are all mounted to the front of the camper to provide a better balance to the vehicle.”

Construction is first class with an overall length of 2.67m, however as this is a cab over style the tray length needed is only 2.17m. Width is 1.83m. There are 4 wind up legs and tie downs, that can be stored beneath the walk in area.

Candy Canvas Carry Me Camper Slide on Camper Walk in model pantry open

Access to the main storage is by 4 lockable gas strut assisted doors. This area allows storage of a fridge and kitchen, shelf area. Speaking of kitchens Phil and Sandy as part of their ongoing development of the important things have developed a slide out pantry and bench area.

One key feature is the way everything fits neatly and there is a spot for everything. It shows attention to detail and functionality. Other features include an 80L water tank, electrical system with deep cycle battery.

Candy Canvas Carry Me Camper Slide on Camper Walk in model awning

The living area is a fold out canvas tent that is made from the best Australian canvas of 12oz for the roof and 8 oz for the walls. The comfortable double bed has a 4inch innerspring mattress and there is plenty of height and an airy feel with midge proof screen ventilation. The fold out section provides an awning and cover for access. It also provides cover for cooking and a comfortable outdoor seating area, which is after all what camping is all about.

Candy Canvas Carry Me Camper Slide on Camper Walk in model steps

The beauty of the Walk in Model is that access is provided by a set of steps at the end of the bed top tray height and then up to the bed after that. There is two drawers in the walk in section for clothing etc. Very handy and clever. This extra length and weight is more than compensated for by the convenience and comfort provided for us ‘older’ campers.

Candy Canvas Carry Me Camper Slide on Camper Walk in model annexe

With the side awning there is a draught skirt and a complete set of walls as well as a ground sheet and bed cover provided as standard. The optional rear awning can also come with a complete set of walls. As is usual with this type of touring slide on camper, the walls would rarely be used and often a waste of space if you take them.

While Candy Canvas will paint your Carry Me Camper in any colour you want the coolest (heat) and most practical colour by far is white.

Candy Canvas Carry Me Camper Slide on Camper Walk in model side

Overall the Candy Canvas Carry Me Camper is an immensely practical, quality Slide on Camper that suits both dual cab and single cab utes. The Walk in Model we looked at here retails from $18,625 and a high roof line model for Patrols and Landcruisers from $19,125. For that money you buy quality, innovation, simple and practical design without superfluous bells and whistles.

But more importantly you buy into a family of owners that get together each year for a travel Corroboree to various parts of Australia. That’s what you want a manufacturer that is willing to go on trips with clients year in year out. That shows confidence in their product. They have after sales service amongst the best in the industry!

Travelander Evron SC2 Premium Slide on Camper
The Travelander Evron SC2 Premium Slide on Camper is designed for a single cab tray back ute. The Travelander Evron SC2 Premium Slide on Camper has been around for a while now and has some unique features.

Based in the Sunshine Coast, Travelander has dealers around Australia and a wide range of products to choose from.

The Travelander Evron SC2 Premium has fibreglass construction for its shell supported by an aluminium base frame and measures 2450mm long, 2000mm wide and has ah Height of 1150mm. In terms of ute back campers this is on the larger size and is shown by its fairly hefty weight of 670 kg. It does however sit fairly snugly behind the cabin, reducing wind effects etc.

Travelander Evron SC2 Premium Slide on Camper folding

Where the Evron SC2 is unique is that it has a hard roof that converts to a hard floor camper and is set up with the aid of a worm drive electric motor. This is sure to attract attention at the camp ground as it looks really cool, not to mention easy to use.

Travelander Evron SC2 Premium Slide on Camper internal

This gives you a fairly large tent area, enough to sleep 2 people in comfort on a queen size mattress, with some clever storage areas beside the bed. Internally there is plenty of room to stand up and change or even have some chairs etc.

Travelander Evron SC2 Premium Slide on Camper bed and storage

The canvas above the bed is tall enough with 4 windows and midge proof screens and provides an airy feel. The tropical roof assists with keeping the internal temperature ambient.

Travelander Evron SC2 Premium under bed drawers

Internally storage is abundant with the afore mentioned beside bed areas but also two large under bed drawers that will hold all your clothes etc. They are carpet lined and deep allowing you to fit heaps in them!

Travelander Evron SC2 Premium Slide on Camper rear kitchen

The kitchen area has a row of shelves for storage with 6 sliding acrylic doors. The stainless steel kitchen is on a swivel and has a three burner stove and sink. There is hot and cold water courtesy of the 14l gas hot water system. Next to the shelves/ cupboards is room for a slide out fridge. The kitchen is at the very rear of the camper, which makes for easy access (especially on the go) but necessitates careful packing for weight distribution as it is behind the rear axle.

You are also supplied with a kitchen sun shade which protects you from the sun if you are stopping off in the middle of the day for a lunch break and want to sit under the kitchen area whilst eating and resting.

Travelander Evron SC2 Premium Slide on Camper external awning

There is an 8 foot awning over the kitchen/ camper entry area, the side large window has a canvas flap that can be pegged out and the other side that houses room for a second fridge and the shower also has a canvas roof area.

Travelander Evron SC2 Premium Slide on Camper external storage and shower

The shower cubicle is effective and again there is hot and cold water, a luxury while camping.

Power is supplied courtesy of a 12 volt electrical system that runs throughout the main structure, with the allocation of two x 240 volt power plug outlets for your convenience; if running off the 240 volt power inlet. Solar panels can also be fitted aftermarket. The camper is fitted with a battery charger and inverter which are located inside the camper, along with two 120 amp hour batteries. These are charged as you are driving along by the aid of an Anderson plug.

Other features include 2 x 4kg gas bottles, 1kg fire extinguisher, LED lights both internally and externally, water tank monitor, 120L water tank and an Anderson plug.

Travelander Evron SC2 Premium Slide on Camper kitchen table

The Travelander Evron SC2 Premium Slide on Camper is designed for those who have a single cab 4WD and want the convenience of taking a boat or bike trailer as well as the camper on their trips or holidays. At a starting price of $33,000 it isn’t expensive or cheap. It does however come loaded with features, an Australian wide dealer network and a 2 year warranty.

2013 Carry me Camper Corroboree
In an industry such as the slide on camper and camper trailer manufacturing where there is a large annual turnaround of manufacturers coming and going its refreshing and unusual to have a manufacturer last for over 20 years. To do so they must have a quality product and have great relationships with their clients.

Candy Canvas is such a business. They make an assortment of canvas products and the very practical Carry Me Camper (which we will be reviewing shortly).Based in the small town of Tintinara in SA, Candy Canvas has an annual corroboree for owners of the Carry me Camper.

I remember being at Hahn River Roadhouse in Cape York in 2003 and there was a number of similar looking campers staying for the night. As you do I went over and chatted to some of the travelers and found out that they were all travelling together and were all owners of Carry Me Campers.

2013 Carry me Camper Corroboree

Well the tradition continues with the 2013 Corroboree being held in South West Queensland recently with the group meeting at Noorama Sportsground which is 95ks south east of Cunnamulla Qld where 113 people were catered for by the Noorama committee on July 12th with people travelling from far as Kalgoorlie in WA and Tasmania.

As often happens with these sort of gatherings many of the attendees travelled with other Carry Me Camper owners that they had met on previous Corroborees with many calling in to the Sheepyard Inn for two nights with a bus tour of the Grawin Opal Fields. (this is where the 2005 Corroboree was held).

Over the weekend $1100 was raised for the Royal Flying Doctor and Ronald McDonald House as both organisations do a tremendous amount of charity work for remote people!

This is the 11th time that Candy Canvas has held a Corroboree for owners and in that time over 1100 people have attended. The owners of Candy Canvas Phil and Sandy believe that such gatherings are invaluable in getting feedback from owners for product improvement.

The proof is in the popularity of these events. You certainly can’t sustain such for over 11 years if you have problems with your product or after sales service. They have pride and confidence in their product.

2013 Carry me Camper Corroboree youngest attendee

Of course the other benefit is that attendees often make lifetime friendships and find travelling companions with like minded people. There were all ages attending.

Phil says the 2014 Corroboree notification will be on their site soon if you are interested. Check the site at www.candycanvas.com.au

Welcome to the second edition of OzRoamer Guide to Slide on Campers and Camper Trailers 2012-13. 2012 has seen the continued growth of this segment of the market and with over 180 manufacturers of camper trailers and slide on campers there is an abundance of choice for consumers. With all this choice comes confusion for buyers and with many manufacturers making conflicting claims it can be a mine field trying to make an educated choice about what to buy.

That’s where we come in. This magazine is full of important information to help you, the buyer, make educated decisions about what to buy to suit your travel plans. We have done all the hard work for you. In fact we have listed as many slide on camper and camper trailer manufacturers that we could find to help you and there are 40 directory listings for some manufacturers to help as well.

On top of that we have an A-Z of what to look for when buying your camper trailer, help with choosing a slide on camper and towing vehicle. There is information on towing restrictions and caring for your canvas as well. Well enough of my ramblings, I hope you enjoy this issue of OzRoamer Guide to Slide on Campers and Campertrailers.

We are fairly relaxed and laid back here and would love to hear from you what you think about our magazine. After all, this entire magazine is about you. Our aim is to enhance your lifestyle. Without you reading it and getting knowledge or pleasure from it why would we bother.

Utility Campers 4WD Adventure Show BrolgaUtility Campers displayed their new Brolga ‘Camperback’ unit at the 4WD Adventure Show for Dual Cab Utes. Utility Campers as the name says specialises in Ute back campers.

Pamela and Stewart Pinney run Utility Campers and have been producing their ‘C190 Camperback’ for a number of years now. It is often said but they have built an enviable reputation for quality products. They have a loyal following and the Camperback owners are like family to Pamela and Stewart.

With the new Brolga ‘Camperback’ unit they continue to lead the market in ultra lightweight campers for tray back vehicles. Their new Brolga ‘Camperback’ has been designed for a twin or dual cab tub style utility.

Utility Campers 4WD Adventure Show stand

Cleverly utilising the hard floor of the tub as the base, it doubles as a storage area whilst travelling and then the hard floor when set up. They continue to use composite construction techniques to keep the weight down, to ensure vehicle payloads are not exceeded. It is a simple quick opening canvas tent unit, which includes vehicle mount, sleeping base, mattress and tent.

This allows each person to utilise the inside space to suit themselves.

Optional items such as kitchen facility units (ie cupboard, stove, dish etc), extra canvas annex additions to suit buyer, inbuilt lighting, a storage seat and any other storage boxes can be supplied. They can also provide secure retaining points for a fridge to ensure safety during travel.

It is marketed as a standard base unit at $8600 ex GST.

Utility Campers Brolga closed

The Brolga can be mounted in to a tub and converted to a “stand alone trailer” if desired, at an extra cost.

Once this model is perfected they will adapt this design to fit a flat tray Ute as well, regardless of tray size.

A flat pack version for “Do It Yourself” builders will be available mid 2011. If you are in the market for a lightweight quality Ute back camper have a chat to Pamela or Stewart, you wont be disappointed.
