Isuzu D-Max  – I’ve mentioned on many occasions that the Isuzu D-Max is a favourite Ute of mine. But what makes it such a good Tow vehicle.

22MY Isuzu D-MAX 4x4 X-TERRAIN Obsidian Grey mica towing Crusader Musketeer Porthos Caravan

Its starts with the reliable and robust 3.0L 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine. It provides some 140kW of power and a very useful 450Nm of torque.

That headline figure is less than some competitors, but it’s the delivery that makes it useful. Maximum torque comes on around 1600rpm and there is about 350Nm available from around 1200rpm. This is combined with a 6 Sp automatic transmission.

These two factors alone ensure that the Isuzu D-Max is an ideal tow vehicle. It will in fact tow up to 3500kg and will do it with ease. The low torque delivery also ensures frugal economy when towing. I’ve towed car trailers and caravans with the D-Max and got around 9.0L/100K doing it. That’s stunning.

Other little features are that the Isuzu comes with the towing hardware fitted as standard. You just need to add whatever hitch you want. The clear reverse camera makes hooking up a trailer easy, and when a trailer is hitched it disables some safety features that may become intrusive such as Blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert which is a bonus.

What is good?

  • 4WD and towing ability
  • Ride and handling
  • Class leading safety features

What is not so good?

  • Not a fan of the roller top
  • Windscreen washers in wiper blades
  • Would love 150kW/500Nm

More thoughts about the Isuzu D-Max LS-U+

  • Its comfortable and practical
  • You jump in it and drive and it feels like home
  • Packed with safety features
  • Lots of clever ideas like
    • bag hooks on the rear of the front seats
    • slide out cup holders on front dash
    • dash top storage bin
    • wireless Apple CarPlay
    • front seat heaters
    • Configurable MFD between dials on the drivers instruments
  • Not a fan of the windscreen washers in the wiper arms
  • Also not a fan of the roll top on the tub. Its takes up space and has to be opened fully to close it again. Not the best when its raining.
  • Like a lot of tubs, reaching the front middle section is difficult, especially with the roll top.

Final thoughts

I’ve said it many times. The D-Max is a robust, reliable and practical 4WD Ute.

The LS-U+ is perhaps the best value version. It has a few extra features for comfort without the bling of the X-Terrain. It would pay to check the drive away deals on the X-Terrain though

The D-Max will tow 3500kg with ease, go anywhere you will sensibly want to go off road and do it in comfort. All D-Max vehicles come with the tow assembly installed. All you have to do is add the hitch tongue you want.

Isuzu D-Max is a favourite Ute of mine.

Towing Tips from GMSV Silverado

When it comes to towing, the MY23 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has the credentials to get the job done with integrated towing technologies that help deliver confidence and make towing big loads easier.

Silverado offers several attributes which help make towing more manageable, including the proven technology of Trailer Sway Control, Hill Start Assist, and Auto Grade Braking.

In addition, provided that a compatible trailer is used, the Silverado LTZ Premium offers up to 14 different camera views, all to help with towing and trailering.

The variety of camera views help to assist with a number of tow-tasks, ranging from making it easier to connect to the trailer itself, providing confidence and peace of mind when on the road, as well as helping to manoeuvre into tight spots when arriving at your destination.

2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 models towing checklist 5

Safe towing suggestions: Pre-tow checklist and on-the-road

Key recommendations which could make up part of a checklist include:

  • Ensure you are complying with local rules and regulations with regards to trailer operation, such as not exceeding gross vehicle mass requirements
  • Check tyre tread and air pressures as well as the hitch connection itself
  • After connecting your trailer to the correctly sized tow ball, attach the safety chain and electrical connection – then check to see the indicator and brake lights are working correctly
  • Always carry a spare wheel with the correct tyre jack and wheel changing equipment
  • With specific regards to a horse float, check the trailer flooring and that mats are firmly located in place to prevent tripping hazards

Once you’re on the road, remember the following:

  • Due to the extra combined mass of your vehicle and the horse float or trailer, increase your following distance and allow more space between you and other vehicles as you will need extra space to come to a stop
  • Conversely, you will also need to factor more space to accelerate, so look for bigger gaps before rejoining traffic
  • When driving, take corners a little wider than normal to allow for your longer load and to avoid hitting things on the inside of the curb

Of course, remember to always read and follow the vehicle and trailer manufacturers’ guidance and instructions before connecting your trailer and taking to the roads.

Notes

^When towing, always remember to read and follow the vehicle and trailer manufacturers’ guidance and instructions before connecting your trailer and taking to the roads.

^^Safety or driver assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Visibility, weather and road conditions may affect feature performance. Read the vehicle Owner’s Manual for more important feature limitations and information.

RAM Truck Australia’s record-breaking run of vehicle production looks set to continue with the Melbourne Manufacturing Facility (MMF) growing in size and capacity.

RAM Trucks Melbourne facility 2With 604 units sold in September 2022 (up 45% on 2021 year to date), the total number of RAMs sold to customers since production began is 17,115 (at Sept 2022). In terms of total right-hand drive RAM trucks produced for the Australian and New Zealand markets at the end of September 2022, 18,019 vehicles have been remanufactured at MMF, confirming RAM Trucks Australia’s unrivalled market leadership of full-size pick-up trucks in this country.

To celebrate this milestone, Bob Graczyk, Head of RAM International, visited Melbourne recently to see the significantly expanded production facility which now boats three dedicated production lines running 24-hours per day.

“Australia is a super important market for us outside of North America, and the growth that we’ve seen here over the last few years has been phenomenal,” said Mr Grazyk.

RAM Trucks Melbourne facility 5

“With the expansion of our plant this growth will continue. It’s incredible what the team has done at RAM Trucks Australia, Ateco Group and MMF. Outside of the US, we sell more full-size pick-up trucks than Ford and GM combined, and Australia representing a market share of more than 70%, is a big contributor of that.

“It’s a dedicated group here that love RAM and it comes through in everything they do in Australia, so we are super proud of having more than 17,000 people out there driving our trucks.”

RAM Trucks Melbourne facility 1

RAM Trucks Australia

RAM Trucks Australia is the world’s only RAM-authorised manufacturer of right-hand drive RAM trucks. The relationship with RAM Trucks in the USA began back in 2013 and continues to innovate to deliver a no compromise, full-size pick-up truck that leads in durability, technology and efficiency.

All RAM Trucks Australia vehicles are international-spec vehicles, uniquely coded for the Australian market and the local build process.

Mr Graczyk: “I was in our Sterling Heights, US, plant a few weeks ago and yesterday I got into a right-hand drive RAM TRX for the first time – the truck that is coming off the line here in Australia is as good as what’s coming out of our main plant.

“So, we’re 1000% supportive of the remanufacturing process here – we work very closely with the team and provide whatever they need in terms support, CAD data etc – and have full confidence in the team here to protect our brand, and to protect our truck.”

RAM Trucks Melbourne facility 6

The new 16,025m2 MMF facility now has two dedicated lines for DS and DT, and a separate line for heavy duty models, all running 24/7 and capable of producing up to 20,000 vehicles per year – it currently produces 10,000 vehicles per annum.

With 641 employees, RAM Trucks Australia is now the biggest vehicle manufacturer in Australia. With 361 new parts on the DS, 402 on the DT and 465 on the heavy-duty models, there are significant local supply chain benefits of this fast-growing vehicle segment.

RAM Trucks Melbourne facility 3

RAM Truck Range

Australia’s biggest and best pick-up truck range starts with the RAM 1500 Express® Crew and Warlock models in the original DS variant, followed by the 1500 Laramie® and 1500 Limited in the recently launched DT model range, and the Heavy Duty 2500 Laramie® and Heavy Duty 3500 Laramie®.

Rounding out the most comprehensive range of official, RAM-authorised, fit-for-purpose full-size pick-up trucks in the country is the all-new RAM TRX®, a powerful new halo model for RAM Trucks Australia.

RAM Trucks Melbourne facility 4

“RAM Trucks Australia created the full-size pick-up truck segment in Australia, and it’s fantastic to see so many of our trucks on the road,” said Jeff Barber, National Manager, RAM Trucks Australia.

“All RAM Trucks are built fit for purpose and ideally suited to the Australian way of life. We offer powerful and versatile tow vehicles that appeal to those looking for a durable workhorse, a 4WD off-roader, a premium family touring vehicle, a luxury pickup, a heavy duty hauler, and the world’s quickest, fastest and most powerful performance truck. Ram Trucks Australia has it all.”

Chevrolet Silverado – GMSV has released a series of trailering safety tips as part of the brand’s partnership with the Zeep Melbourne International Three Day Event, taking place at the Werribee Park Precinct from June 9-13.

GMSV Silverado horse

“The Chevrolet Silverado is the epitome of what a tow vehicle should be, as it offers impressive levels of horsepower and outstanding towing ability of up to 4.5-tonnes,” said GMSV General Manager Marketing, Customer Experience and Communications, Jodie Lennon.

Silverado offers a number of attributes which help make towing easier, including the proven technology of Trailer Sway Control, Hill Start Assist and Auto Grade Braking.

In addition, the Silverado LTZ Premium offers up to 15 different camera views, all to help with towing and trailering.

The variety of camera views help to assist with a number of tow-tasks, ranging from making it easier to connect to the trailer itself, providing confidence and peace of mind when on the road, as well as helping to manoeuvre into tight spots when arriving at your destination.

GMSV Silverado horse

“One of the most innovative accessory features available is the ‘transparent trailer’ view, which through the use of camera technology quite literally makes your trailer disappear,” said Ms Lennon.

“Irrespective of how big the item is that you are towing, it allows the driver to virtually ‘see through’ a compatible trailer.”

As a horse owner herself, Ms Lennon runs through her own checklist whenever she hitches anything to the back of a Silverado.

GMSV Silverado horse

“I have found having a list is the best way to cover off all the important things well before you drive out the gate,” said Ms Lennon.

“It can be all too easy to rush and forget one or two things, so taking the time to double check can save a lot of angst in the event of anything going wrong.

“A checklist is a great starting point, but as with any time you’re on the road – be prepared for the unexpected and be ready for anything.”

 Safe Towing Suggestions

Pre-Tow Checklist and On the Road

  • Conversely, you will also need to factor more space to accelerate, so look for bigger gaps before rejoining the traffic
  • When driving, take corners a little wider than normal to allow for your longer load and to avoid hitting things on the inside of the curve

Of course, remember to always read and follow the vehicle and trailer manufacturers’ guidance and instructions before connecting your trailer and taking to the roads.

If your car or 4×4 is struggling to tow your new caravan or trailer up hills these days – or you’re just in the market for a new car in general – you may be wondering where to start when it comes to finding an upgrade.

21MY Isuzu MU-X 4x4 LS-T Mercury Silver Metallic - Caravan Campground.

We’ve put together some great tips for choosing, finding, and financing your new towing vehicle so you have a smooth ride when exploring this Great Southern Land in 2022.

What’s your caravan’s GVM?

Just like buying your first caravan, the first question you have to ask what your caravan or RV’s Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is. If you’ve gone caravanning more often than not, you already know this like your phone number! Even so, you should double check so your new vehicle can safely and legally tow your RV.

Upgrading for adventure

If you’ve been hitching your trailer or caravan to a powered site, it’s likely been fine using a bog-standard sedan, wagon – or even hatchback in some cases. But if you’ve developed a taste for adventure, you will need something with more torque and towing capacity to maximise safety and reliability. Most larger 4WDs have a 3,500kg towing capacity and 350kg tow ball rating – and you may want to invest even more money into stronger suspension so it can take the more off-beat tracks.

Buying new or used?

Now comes the crucial part: should you buy new or used? Yes, new cars are expensive. If you spend $50,000 on a new car, it loses $10,000 of its value on the way home. But it is easier to finance than a used car or vehicle. Used vehicles have low residual value, no warranty to speak of, and you have to deal with private sellers who may or may not show up depending on their schedule (or if they just plain forget!) Since you’re likely putting a used vehicle under more stress, you may need to shell out for costly maintenance or repairs sooner rather than later, too.

Financing your new towing vehicle

Like most major purchases, it’s likely you’ll have to finance your new towing vehicle. Look to compare car loans so you can get a good deal; you can also consult a car loan broker to help you find more loans from more lenders, which may give you an even more competitive rate.

Getting pre-approval is also advantageous. Pre-approval like having a car loan approval except you are yet to find your car. You get about a month to three months to find one and follow through on the finance. It gives you a price ceiling which a dealer or seller must match if they want to make a sale – which gives you the upper hand in negotiation.

Shortlisting candidates

When you have an idea of which vehicles you’d like to buy, try to arrange test drives so you get a feel for them and how they drive. If your dealer can arrange for you to test drive with your caravan hitched, more so the better. That way you can upgrade with confidence!

The advice here is general in nature; consult a professional financial adviser before committing to a loan.

Isuzu MU-X is one of the best towing vehicles on the market, especially when you consider the bang for your buck with capability, economy and ease of towing. The latest MU-X takes a great towing vehicle and makes it better.

21MY Isuzu MU-X 4x4 LS-T Magnetic Red Mica - Boat Ramp. Isuzu MU-X Highlights

  • Unique Australian-specification All-New MU-X now capable of towing 3.5-tonnes braked.
  • Generous payload and axle weight capacities to accommodate accessories.
  • Equipped for the long haul, with an 80-litre fuel tank and a range of up to 1,000kms per tank.
  • 4WD models feature ‘Terrain Command’, a Rear-Differential Lock and Rough Terrain Mode as standard.

Engineered to travel, the All-New MU-X combines the latest in driver-assist and safety technologies, improved capabilities including 3.5-tonne braked towing and increased payload capacities for tourers and families who don’t pack light.

Coupled with new-levels of refinement and equipment to match the famed dependability of the previous-generation that has solidified the MU-X as a favourite amongst Australians for close to a decade, the All-New MU-X in its unique Australian-specification is set to continue its popularity.

The first-generation MU-X has long been a favourite amongst families and travellers as a spacious, versatile and dependable multi-purpose seven-seat SUV. Derived from the award-winning Isuzu D-MAX ute, the MU-X has been the #1 selling ‘ute-based SUV’ for the past seven years.

At home in the suburbs during a typical nine-to-five working week, on the open road with a caravan in tow and off the beaten track when the road ends, the MU-X has proven its place as the versatile solution for many families in need of a vehicle for all occasions.

“For years, the MU-X has been a favourite with travelling motorists, caravaners and families—the perfect all-rounder that ticked the boxes for so many Australians,” said Isuzu UTE Australia’s Managing Director, Hiroyasu Sato.

“I’m proud to say that this will continue with the All-New MU-X, with its 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity, generous storage and carrying capacity and refinements inside and out set to continue that trend.”

“We asked our customers what they valued and what we could improve on, and their feedback has led to this latest-generation MU-X. It truly is a vehicle influenced by the feedback of Australians, for Australia.”

With customer surveys detailing that half of all Australian Isuzu owners tow with their vehicle, Isuzu engineers have introduced a new lighter and stronger body-on-frame chassis with new coil spring suspension, which affords the All-New MU-X a braked towing capacity of 3.5-tonnes.

Isuzu MU-X Body and Chassis

Regarded as the backbone of a vehicle’s strength and capability, the new chassis is extensively constructed with high-tensile steel. Through the adoption of wider (+14%) and taller (+34%) longitudinal chassis rails with additional reinforcement by way of an extra lateral crossmember and a new rear subframe cradle, the All-New MU-X improves longitudinal and torsional rigidity by +25% and +23% respectively.

Eight large body mounts keep the body secured atop of the chassis, which is now constructed using double the amount of ultra-high and high-tensile steel that was used in the previous-generation MU-X. The manufacture adds an additional 157 spot welds across key areas of the body and an innovative ring-structured manufacturing design; which integrates the B, C and D-Pillars with closed cross sections. Overall, the body is +10% stiffer and stronger in comparison with the preceding MU-X.

This chassis and body combination is the strongest and most durable ever seen in a MU-X, featuring improvements in corrosion-resistance, rigidity, capacity, quietness and safety.

Isuzu MU-X Suspension

Improvements to the ride, comfort and handling have been made by redesigning the suspension—a tune engineered for Australian customers looking to tow. Improving on the independent front suspension (IFS) design for improved ride and handling, up front is an all-new double wishbone design with new high-mounted upper-control arms.

The wider span upright arms further helps to maintain camber and caster angles and geometry composure; maintaining a wider contact patch with the road and vastly improving cornering stability and performance. This improves control of wheel geometry during compression and extension, whilst optimising the roll centre geometry and improving vehicle handling and dynamics.

An increase in front spring rate further stiffens the front axle; enhancing chassis composure, corner stability and front axle load capacity, without compromising ride or handling. A heavily redesigned 34mm-diameter front anti-roll bar further aids in optimising roll centre geometry and reducing body roll.

Overall, the improved IFS design ensures the All-New Isuzu MU-X remains stable, predictable and comfortable when on-road, while maximising axle droop, flexibility and traction when off-road.

The five-link coil spring rear suspension has been completely redesigned to handle an increased payload when towing, whilst still remaining comfortable when unladen. Stiffer than the previous MU-X, rear coil spring rate has been increased to 2.56kgf/mm, allowing for increased payload capacity when loaded up, with minimal vehicle pitch and squat.

Redesigned to reduce unwanted body roll and improve vehicle composure, the 23mm diameter anti-roll bar has a 36.6% wider span than the previous model—measuring 1,250mm in width across the axle up from 915mm—which better manages sprung mass in corners. Overall, the new coil spring suspension offers more flexibility, load-carrying capacity and enhanced handling and dynamics than the preceding MU-X.

Isuzu MU-X GVM, GCM and Payload Capacities

Combining the lighter and stiffer chassis with the more versatile and capable suspension tune, not only have Isuzu Engineers increased the All-New MU-X’s towing capacity to 3.5-tonnes, but they’ve increased the payload capacity, Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM), Gross Combination Mass (GCM) and axle loads.

The GVM has increased by +50kg on each model to 2700kg or 2800kg depending on the vehicle’s 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain configuration. The GCM scales in at 5900kg—a sizable increase of +150-250kg when compared with the previous-generation MU-X. Front and rear axle loads have also increased by +100kg and +50kg respectively, allowing for more room for accessory and frontal protection fitment.

Vehicle payload capacity varies across the range, with the MU-X LS-M 4×4 able to carry up to 665kg; ideal for families that don’t pack light when on the road for an extended trip.

Isuzu MU-X Interior

With the majority of Australian motorists spending upwards of three-hours on average behind the wheel each day, the interior of the All-New MU-X has been designed to maximise occupant comfort and space, no matter how long the journey is.

Seven-seats, each trimmed in either premium cloth or leather-accented upholstery combines quality with comfort with each pew individually reclinable; a welcomed addition whilst on the road. It also features a plethora of cavernous storage solutions, including dual glove boxes, smart phone nooks, twelve drink holders and best-in-class rear storage capacity of any ute-based SUV caters for the masses.

Catering for Australia’s adverse climates, all variants feature air conditioning vents and controls across all rows, with LS-U and LS-T models further benefiting from dual-zone climate control.

The LS-T takes comfort in cooler climates a step further, with the quilted leather-accented front pews featuring variable heating, and a Remote Engine Start feature—which allows the driver to start the vehicle remotely to warm or cool the interior.

Featuring the latest in connectivity and infotainment technology, at the heart of the interior is a new 9-inch high-definition infotainment system (LS-U and LS-T), with LS-M variants sporting a 7-inch screen. Smartphone mirroring is standard across all models, with Android Auto™ and wireless Apple CarPlay® conveniently ensuring that Android devices and iPhones® respectively remain connected. In the LS-U and LS-T, planning the route ahead is also simple and intuitive with in-built Satellite-Navigation.

Maximising its carrying potential with customer feedback in mind, rear luggage access has been improved with a higher and flatter load surface, with LS-U and LS-T models featuring a power tailgate for easy use. Internal rear storage volume has increased to a total of 2,138 litres (SAE measurement) with the 2nd row and 3rd row folded flat.

With just the 3rd row folded, the MU-X can accommodate 1,119 litres of storage and with all rows unfolded to accommodate seven-occupants, rear cargo volume is 311 litres—more than enough to fit a full-size golf bag, a folded-up pram or a week’s worth of shopping.

All in all, the All-New MU-X is the most relaxing, comfortable and spacious vehicle ever designed by Isuzu.

21MY D-MAX Engine Bay 2

Isuzu MU-X Powertrain

While strength to carry is important, torque and efficiency is key to getting there, and back again. Renowned for its dependability, durability and real-world efficiency, Isuzu’s 4JJ3-TCX 3-litre, turbo-diesel engine and 6-speed automatic transmission powers the All-New MU-X. Power and torque outputs have been increased to 140kW at 3,600rpm and 450Nm at 1,600-2,600rpm—a 10kW and 20Nm improvement over the preceding-generation’s mill.

Optimised for towing, hauling and efficiency, midrange torque has been improved, generating 400Nm from 1,400rpm through to 3,250rpm. Impressively, 300Nm is produced from just 1,000rpm—just above idle—a benefit to four-wheel drivers who require low-down torque for crawling up hills in low-range. The result is a linear delivery of torque across the entire rev-range and a welcomed improvement in both drivability and performance, particularly when towing or under load.

21MY Isuzu MU-X 4x4 LS-T Mercury Silver metallic - Towing

With lower exhaust emissions than any Isuzu before it, the 4JJ3-TCX in the MU-X pairs the proven Diesel Particulate Diffuser (DPD) with a maintenance-free Lean Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Trap (LNT) and H2S Catalytic Converter within the exhaust system, which significantly reduces harmful particulate matter, NOx and Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) exhaust emissions.

Maximising range between fuel fill-ups, the All-New MU-X further benefits from a 23% larger fuel tank, increasing fuel capacity to 80-litres—an important update fuelled directly by feedback from towing and touring motorists. With official combined-cycle fuel consumption figures returning 7.8-8.3-litres/100km, the best of the All-New MU-X range has the capability of travelling upwards of 1000-kilometers on a single tank of diesel.

21MY Isuzu MU-X 4x4 LS-M Cobalt Blue Mica & LS-T Mercury Silver Metallic - Acc Creek Camping.

Isuzu MU-X Off-Road

Engineered with the hardware to get you out there and back home again, all 4×4 variants come equipped with ‘Terrain Command’ Control, which allows the driver to seamlessly switch between 4×2-High, 4×4-High and 4×4-Low drive modes at a twist of a switch, in under a second.

Compared with the previous-MU-X, the dual-range transfer case is more efficient and durable, transferring drive to the front axle via a stronger front shaft and a pair of stronger and thicker CV shafts.

At the rear, a new stronger one-piece carbon steel tail shaft replaces the outgoing item and transfers torque to the rear differential—which now features an electromagnetic rear differential lock, which is conveniently activated at the press of a button.

Drawing air from the front of the vehicle, the engine air intake has been heavily revised with a labyrinth of sealed airways that enables the MU-X to wade through water of up to 800mm, at a constant pace of 7km/h.

An optional engine intake snorkel can be installed using the pre-fabricated pathway in the internal wheelhouse—a specialised conduit crafted during vehicle assembly that is unique to the Australian-specification MU-X.

21MY ISUZU MU-X LS-T Mercury Silver metallic - Snorkel.

Mitigating the likelihood of water ingression during water crossings, differential breather hoses are routed and vented clear above the 800mm wading depth capacity.

Extensive 1.5mm-thick steel and 5mm-thick poly-composite underbody protection protects vital powertrain components from debris and ground strikes when off-road, whilst the 80-litre polyurethane fuel tank is encased with an additional layer of aluminium shielding for additional protection.

Maximising traction and driveability in technical, slippery and rough conditions, all MU-X 4×4 models feature a ‘Rough Terrain Mode’ electronic off-road driver aid. Effective at controlling excessive wheel spin, the system measures slippage via wheel speed sensors and finely modulates brake force to each individual spinning wheels, which in turn redistributes torque to the opposing-wheel on the same axle with more grip.

This maximises drive transfer to the surface by proportioning torque to the wheels with the most grip; for optimal driveability, tractability and torque transfer to the terrain, with little to no loss to momentum.

With more suspension travel than the previous-model, a new stronger body and chassis and a new 3-litre turbo-diesel powertrain with selectable 4WD providing torque and drive, the All-New MU-X is as capable churning through soft sand on Fraser Island as it is traversing the Gibb River Road.

21MY ISUZU MU-X LS-U & LS-T - Clearview Towing Mirrors Compact Extended.

Isuzu MU-X The Extra Gear

With new touring and towing capabilities comes an expansion to the Isuzu UTE Genuine Accessories catalogue, with a selection of touring and towing focused accessories engineered specifically for Isuzu vehicles. These include frontal protection by way of steel or alloy bull bars and nudge bars, a genuine tow bar kit with either a 7-pin or 12-pin plug, a pair of ClearView extendable towing mirrors with power-fold function and integrated Blind-Spot Monitoring alert lights and LED indicators, genuine Electronic Brake Controller (EBC), and available for the MU-X for the first time, a genuine Weight Distribution Hitch (WDH)—which has all been designed and tested to work in harmony with the on-board safety systems and allow you to get the most out of your vehicle when towing.

No matter the terrain, the route or the trailer in tow, the All-New MU-X range with 3.5-tonne braked towing is more capable than ever before. The customer-driven improvements elevate the All-New MU-X towards the front of the pack and Isuzu’s seven-seat SUV is set to remain a popular choice on Australian roads, tracks and caravan parks.

Mitsubishi Pajero after suspension upgrade
Mitsubishi Pajero after suspension upgrade

Our recent Flinders Ranges trip last year showed that the existing suspension upgrade we put in ten years ago was desperately in need of replacing. The extra weight of towing a camper trailer along with a boot full of gear was harsh over the corrugations etc. The Bilstein shock absorbers were on their last legs, however the King Coil springs were still ok but the Polyair airbags were perforated.

Mitsubishi Pajero before suspension upgrade
Mitsubishi Pajero before suspension upgrade

The search started for a replacement suspension system. There are lots of kits on the market for the Pajero. Like a lot of aftermarket accessories the plethora of choice makes your head spin. The key is to match what is available to what you mainly use the vehicle for. Project Pajero is mainly used for outback touring while towing camper trailers.

Mitsubishi Pajero before suspension upgrade rear shocks
Mitsubishi Pajero before suspension upgrade rear shocks

Actually we didn’t have to look very far for the replacement. Back in 1987 we put in an upgrade into our Toyota Landcruiser 60 series Sahara. The choice then was simple as it is today. We chose to install an Ultimate Suspension system as we were travelling around Australia while towing a viscount caravan.

Mitsubishi Pajero before suspension upgrade upper control arm
Mitsubishi Pajero before suspension upgrade upper control arm

So to go full circle back to where we started we chose to install an Ultimate suspension upgrade into Project Pajero as well. The first thing we needed to do was complete the comprehensive questionnaire that Ultimate sent me through. This went into detail about what accessories are fitted, what the current suspension is , what load carrying is needed, what the measurements are from the centre of the wheel to the guard on each corner etc.

Project Pajero height check before suspension upgrade
Project Pajero height check before suspension upgrade

The suspension upgrade involved loading the vehicle as if you are travelling as you would in the outback or however you would normally travel. This way they can determine the strength of the springs and shocks needed. You see unlike other suspension kits the Ultimate Suspension system is individually tailored to your specific needs. That is like a bespoke suspension system designed especially for you.

Mitsubishi Pajero after suspension upgrade upper control arm
Mitsubishi Pajero after suspension upgrade upper control arm

So I delivered the Pajero to Ultimate Suspension loaded to the hilt with gear to simulate how we would be when travelling with a camper trailer on the back . Before they got to work replacing the shock absorbers, springs and air bags, the vehicle gets test driven over various road surfaces to see what the ride is like for a comparison to how the vehicle feels after the suspension kit is fitted, it also allows them to detect any abnormalities that the customer may not be aware of and may need to repair.

Project Pajero shock_brake proportioning and wheel alignment check before work started
Project Pajero shock_brake proportioning and wheel alignment check before work started

After that the vehicle is brought into the work shop for a weight test, shock test, wheel alignment measure and brake efficiency / proportioning test.

This gives them the base measurements for the vehicle when it came in and it will show any faults in the operation of the brakes and brake proportioning setup.

After this the vehicle has its heights measured both before and then after the suspension kit has been fitted, it then gets the brake check carried out again and another test drive to settle the suspension and check for possible noises or issues, after the road test they put it back on the hoist and carry out a tighten and check making sure the suspension is all functioning correctly.

Mitsubishi Pajero rear after fitted please note high pressure airbag sleeve fitted
Mitsubishi Pajero rear after fitted please note high pressure airbag sleeve fitted

The new system comprised high density shocks, specially designed progressive rate coils, heavy duty airbags with high pressure sleeves fitted to prevent a repeat of the airbags getting caught in-between the coils as before.

So we picked up the Pajero and took it for a drive. The first thing we noticed was how high the car was after the upgrade. The lift was back to where it was all those years ago. Clearance was substantial. The second thing we noticed was just how compliant the new suspension was. Before where the Pajero would clunk and bump over irregular roads it now was so smooth.

Over dirt roads and corrugations the new shock absorbers and springs were superb. We hooked up an Avida Caravan behind. This was the Avida caravan we recently took to Tasmania, and the Pajero barely noticed it was there all without load levelling assistance.

Mitsubishi Pajero after suspension upgrade towing avida
Mitsubishi Pajero after suspension upgrade towing avida

Once we have had the Ultimate Suspension system installed we have towed camper trailers, boats, bikes, gone to the arm, gone 4WDriving and used the car as a daily driver. The suspension is chalk and cheese with the old system. It doesn’t sag when hooked up to tow something, it is more compliant over all road surfaces and has more articulation when off road.

There are many aftermarket suspension systems you can choose from. However there are none better that a bespoke Ultimate Suspension system. As far as Project Pajero is concerned we absolutely made the right choice.

Toyota Landcruiser Sahara
Toyota has developed an additional layer of confidence and control for owners who use their “King Off the Road” LandCruiser 200 Series for towing.

The legendary LandCruiser has now become the first vehicle in the Toyota range to adopt the added safety of trailer sway control.

The system – enabled by and integrated with the existing vehicle stability control technologies – helps the driver in the event that a trailer starts to swing from side to side.

It is designed to suppress swaying that can be triggered by factors such as crosswinds, bumpy roads and sharp turns of the steering wheel.

It detects trailer sway based on information from the vehicle’s yaw-rate sensor, acceleration sensor and steering sensor.

If sway is detected, the system uses deceleration control and yaw-moment control to suppress the effects.

It warns the driver via the slip indicator in the instrument cluster and alerts following drivers by illuminating the stop lamps.

The system operates seamlessly and does not require the addition of hardware or any change to the trailer.

Another safety enhancement for LandCruiser is the addition of knee airbags for the driver and front passenger in GX and volume-selling GXL model grades, bringing the total number of airbags to eight.

High-grade VX and Sahara have 10 SRS airbags, including rear-seat side airbags.

LandCruiser 200 series models all attract a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Further upgrades to LandCruiser 200 Series include dark grey privacy glass for the rear-side, rear-quarter and rear-windscreen glass on GXL models.

VX now has dusk-sensing headlamps while top-of-the-range Sahara gains dusk-sensing headlamps and digital (DAB) radio.

LandCruiser 200 models are available with a choice of V8 engines – a 4.6-litre petrol or a 4.5-litre twin-turbo diesel – mated to six-speed automatic transmissions.

The petrol V8, with variable valve timing on both the inlet and exhaust ports, produces maximum power of 227kW at 5500rpm and peak torque of 439Nm at 3400rpm.

The twin-turbo common-rail diesel engine delivers maximum power output of 195kW and a thumping 650Nm of torque.

All LandCruiser 200 variants have a 93-litre main fuel tank and a 45-litre sub tank – a total of 138 litres.

Price increases with the latest updates have been limited to $1,500 across the range, starting with the five-seat turbo-diesel GX at $78,990*.

The eight-seat turbo-diesel GXL is $89,990 plus the unchanged $3,250 option of the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. Seven-seat turbo-diesel VX is $100,990 and seven-seat turbo-diesel Sahara is $119,990.

The three eight-seat petrol models are GXL $84,990, VX $95,990 and Sahara $114,990.

LandCruiser 200 models are covered by Toyota Service Advantage capped-price servicing at $210 per service#.
