Mitsubishi Pajero – everything you need to know

Pajero – Mitsubishi has announced the details for the return of the Mitsubishi Pajero 4WD. These include Australian pricing and specification for the iconic Mitsubishi Pajero.

“For four generations, the Pajero has defined Mitsubishi. It has stood out for its capability, comfort and sheer dependability, showcasing the best Mitsubishi has to offer,” said MMAL CEO, Shunichi Kihara.

“The All-New Pajero takes the Pajero backstory and modernises it. It maintains its flagship position in the global Mitsubishi hierarchy, combining Pajero’s core attributes and applying it in a way that defines modern ‘Mitsubishiness’.

“Interest has been exceptional, with over 3000 pre-registrations already received,” he said.

Exterior Styling

Designed in Japan under the ‘Grand Charisma’ design theme, Pajero has been styled from the outset to showcase premium craftsmanship and superior quality befitting its status as Mitsubishi’s global flagship.

Inspired by the original Pajero’s solidity, All-New Pajero is thoroughly modern while retaining a commanding presence of its own.

The front design features a futuristic T-shaped lighting signature. The Dynamic Flow Light on GSR gives the top-grade further personality – for example, when unlocking the vehicle, the lighting animation conveys quickness, as if coming to life. All exterior lighting is by LED.

A further nod to Pajero heritage exists in the side profile, with the c-pillar aping the first-generation’s ‘roll-bar’.

The pronounced centre edge of the bonnet creates a three-dimensional effect while supporting exceptional visibility.

The strong horizontal theming of the Pajero’s exterior is continued inside, creating a commanding sense of width and all-round vision supported by the impressively large and clear infotainment interface.

Comfort and Technology

With a focus on Japanese craftsmanship and fine detail, the Pajero’s interior is designed to deliver an opulent occupant experience.

For maximum convenience, the cabin is accessed via a newly-designed key that provides a hands-free unlocking function on approach. This new device contains an integrated mechanical key as a backup.

A choice of 5- (GLS) or 7-seat options are available, with all layouts designed to maximise comfort, visibility and usability, even on longer trips.

Seating design is inspired by rally experience, offering exceptional support in the bolsters to reduce fatigue and a range of adjustability to tailor the experience. Powered lumbar support is available across the range.

Overall, the cabin is airy and spacious. The upright a-pillar design contributes to class-leading headroom, while the second-row slides over a 150mm range for adjustable leg-room to support second- and third-row occupants. Ingress and egress to the third-row have also been improved, with maximised head and shoulder room.

With the third-row seats folded down, VDA luggage volume is listed at 519 litres. Additionally, a cargo floor box sits under the boot floor provides an additional 10 litres of capacity.

Cabin details

Fine detail is evident throughout the cabin, from the soft-touch leather surfaces to the intricate stitchwork with hand-stitching applied to the instrument panel and door trims. In GSR, the large panoramic sunroof bathes the cockpit in natural light.

While enjoying Pajero’s exceptional ambience, cabin occupants can easily interact with vehicle functions, communications and entertainment via impressive monolithic displays.

GLS grades feature a 12.3-inch centre screen and 12.3-inch meter cluster, while EXCEED and GSR models offer an exceptional 14.3-inch meter centre screen and 14.3-inch meter cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard, and MITSUBISHI CONNECT – providing a range of convenient services including Automatic Collision Notification and Remote Climate Control – is standard across the range.

Smart power solutions abound throughout the cabin, with USB-C ports supporting up to 27W fast charging. The front Qi wireless charger can manage up to 15W fast charging on Qi-enabled smartphones.

The meter display also harks back to Pajero traditions, with a specific off-road mode preset to display an altimeter, and inclinometers to show pitch and roll. Other items such as a compass, AYC status and world clock are also available.

Further screen features include standard Multi Around View Monitor and an advanced ‘Bonnet see-through’ camera that digitally aids vehicle placement, allowing for precise placement – particularly off-road.

Reinforcing a commitment to luxury, both the EXCEED and flagship Pajero GSR deploy the Dynamic Sound Yamaha Ultimate audio system. Continuing a relationship established with the Outlander EXCEED TOURER, the Pajero audio system offers an immersive 12-speaker layout. An 11-channel Dual Amplifier featuring Yamaha’s signature Digital Signal Processor and compensation systems for speed, rain and even air conditioning combine to deliver a crystal-clear audio experience.

Engine and Drivetrain

Pajero’s power unit builds on the success of Triton’s 4N16, further refined to provide further improved drivability, response and efficiency. In this guise, Pajero meets Euro 6d standards – a first for a Mitsubishi engine.

This new-generation 4N16 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine features a latest-generation variable-geometry turbocharger to support increased mid-range torque, providing impressive response right where the bulk of driving is conducted. Peak torque is up 10Nm to a 480Nm peak, with power set at 150kW. A water-cooled intercooler, dual-loop EGR system and the adoption of AdBlue and electric fan cooling system all contribute to improved efficiency. An Auto Stop and Go system further supports efficient driving in stop-start city conditions.

Supporting this is an enhanced, lighter-weight eight-speed automatic transmission featuring a wider ratio spread to support impressive response and reduced fuel use. The transmission has also been calibrated to support smooth shifting, especially at constant throttle and incorporates engine blipping control on downshifts.

A low-range transfer case is also standard, with rear diff lock on all grades.

Super Select II 4WD system

The benchmark Super Select II 4WD system allows the driver to easily switch between drivetrain modes. In turn, the integrated Super-All Wheel Control with Active Yaw Control further supports driver involvement by tailoring vehicle functions to suit the prevailing conditions, across seven drive modes.

Super Select II 4WD  Function Available S-AWC mode/s
2H (RWD, high ratio) Efficient on-road driving, fine conditions Normal, Eco
4H (4WD, high ratio) On-road driving, variable conditions Normal, Gravel, Snow
4HLc (4WD, high ratio, locked centre differential) Off-road driving Normal, Mud, Sand
4LLc (4WD, low ratio, locked centre differential) Heavy-duty off-road driving Normal, Rock

Frame and suspension

A significantly enhanced frame underpins Pajero, offering the robust capability of traditional frame-based off-road vehicles with modern refinement levels, ensuring a quiet, comfortable occupant experience.

The new frame is significantly stiffer than Pajero Sport’s and is supported by long-travel suspension with wider tracks, high-response shock absorbers and stabiliser bars that effectively limit body roll when cornering. Electric power steering provides fluid response to driver input.

This ensures Pajero has a blend of ride quality and response that supports the driver in all conditions, on- and off-road.

Towing and load-carrying

Pajero offers a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity, while Trailer Load Assist (TLA) actively enhances stability while towing. If swaying is detected, TLA can adjust power and braking to each individual wheel to maximise stability.

A static roof-load capacity of 300kg (dynamic: 100kg) ensures popular accessories such as roof racks can be fitted with confidence.

Exterior Colours

Two prestige paint colours debut on Pajero: Armour Copper and Phantom Blue.

Armour Copper joins Mitsubishi’s iconic Black Diamond prestige paint as exclusively available on EXCEED and GSR, while Phantom Blue is across all grades.

Uniquely, GSR features a black roof, combining for a two-tone exterior look when paired with a non-black primary colour.

A range of solid, metallic and pearlescent paints are also available.
