Five Victorian Police HUMMER H3s’ have helped keep Victoria’s streets safe as part of a series of initiatives to address public order related issues in the Melbourne CBD and throughout Victoria.

Five Victorian Police HUMMER H3s’ have helped keep Victoria’s streets safe as part of a series of initiatives to address public order related issues in the Melbourne CBD and throughout Victoria.
Provided as part of a no-cost community service initiative for five months, Victoria Police identified the HUMMER as ideal for policing duties throughout Victoria due to their bold exterior look and functional capability.
“We sincerely thank HUMMER for their generosity in donating five HUMMERS to Victoria Police over a five month period” Inspector Paul Ross said.
“Due to their distinct appearance, they were instantly recognisable to the public and acted as a strong deterrent.”
The HUMMERS were fitted out with the standard police vehicle equipment including sirens and communications devices in order to ensure public order duties could be conducted as normal.
This equipment, paired with the strong exterior presence of the vehicles, was a significant component of the ‘Safe Streets’ campaign Victoria Police initiated in November 2008.
Over the five month period, the vehicles patrolled regularly through the Melbourne CBD as well as regional areas including Boroondara, Shepparton, Geelong, Stonnington and Frankston.
“Each vehicle travelled approximately 13,000 kilometres and had a strong police presence on the road,” added Ross.
Each of the vehicles conducted regular duties and responded to incidents as part of the police fleet.

HUMMER has a long history of supporting community service initiatives in the United States such as emergency response vehicles for the Red Cross and recreation projects in the Sierra National Forest, California.
HUMMER’s relationship with the Red Cross began in 2004 with a commitment to provide 72 vehicles to the Red Cross that includes a combination of HUMMER disaster response vehicles, as well as $100,000 each year from the GM Foundation.
HUMMER’s recreation projects include a partnership with the non-profit group Tread Lightly! and the U.S. Forest Service in a program called HUMMER’s Recreation Rescue in an effort to provide project grants to recreation activities around the country to ensure land remains accessible for responsible recreationists while protecting the integrity of the forest.
